Harbor - Castine, Maine

Castine harbor, 1995

This view shows the Maine Maritime Academy's former training vessel (the USNS Upshur) at its wharf (left) and a "windjammer" (passenger schooner) under sail (center) in August, 1995. For a photo and information about the current training vessel, click here. See a chart of the harbor.

The Academy also operates a 88-foot, 66-ton wooden sailing schooner, the Bowdoin, which was launched in 1921. Under the command of Admiral Donald MacMillan, one-time Castine resident, she made 26 voyages of exploration to the Arctic. A National Historic Landmark, the Bowdoin is the flagship of the Maine Maritime Academy sailing fleet, and carries dual certification from the U.S. Coast Guard for any ocean as a sail training vessel and small passenger vessel.
