"The Howlands in America (1939), p. 20: "He possessed a great deal of energy, was a systematic businessman, and was highly respected in the colony. In 1674 he was appointed by the court 'Ensigne of the Milletary companie' of Barnstable, and in 1689 was chosen one of the selectmen of that town."
