John F. WATTS

[21935]

CA 1799 - 19 MAY 1874

Family 1 : Olive H. MORTON
  1. +Sarah Jane WATTS

INDEX

[21935]

Virginia Horler's notes:

John F. Watts was born in Maine about 1799. He married Olive H. Morton in 1818 and they had eleven children, at least seven of whom died before age six. The births of their eleven children are listed in the Portland, Cumberland, Maine Births and Christenings LDS Film 0882994. Olive died at age 45, and John, a widower with two young children married Eliza B. Small in June 1844. Between 1848 and 1852 John F. Watts was appointed by the Lighthouse Service, predecessor of the U.S. Coast Guard, to be the Lighthouse Keeper at the Portland Head Light on Cape Elizabeth.

The poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who was born in 1807 in Portland, Maine was a frequent visitor to the Portland Head Lighthouse. Longfellow had a favorite rock he liked to sit on. Longfellow's poem, The Lighthouse," published about 1852 was inspired in part by his many hours spent at Portland Head Light.

Before and after his lighthouse keeper service, John F. Watts was a mariner and later a ship master.

His Portland, Maine death and burial record says he was 73 at time of death (19 May 1874). He died in Lynn, Essex, MA and was buried at Cape Elizabeth in the Forest City Cemetery. John's second wife, Eliza, is also buried in the Forest City Cemetery. (Source: Delayed Returns in State of Maine)

John F. Watt's father is probably the John Watts listed in the 1800 Census in Cumberland County, Maine, page 301 or 282, with a household consisting of 1 male under 10 (probably John F.), 1 male 26-44; 1 female under 10, one 26-44 and 1 45 and over. (Widow with family?)

In 1810 in Bath, Lincoln, Maine, page 341: John Watts: 1 male under 10, one male 10-15, and one male 45 and over; one female under 10, one female 16-15, and one female 26-44.

Probably father of John F. Watts: In 1820 in Portland, Cumberland, Maine, page 267 or 185: John Watts: one male 45 and over; one female 16-25, and one female 45 and over.

Probably John F. Watts: In 1820 in Portland, Cumberland, Maine, page 265: John Watts: one male 16-25; two females under 10 and one female 16-25.

1823 Portland City Directory: John F. Watts, mariner, State Street. (1877 Directory page 391)

Probably John F. Watts: In 1830 in Portsmouth, Rockingham, New Hampshire, page 113: John Watts: one male under 5, one male 30-39; one female 10-14, one female 30-39 and one female 50-59. (Widow with family?)

1831 Portland City Directory page 65: Mary Watts, widow, Union Street. NOTE: John F. Watts is not listed, probably because he was living in Portsmouth, NH - see census for 1830 above.

1834 Portland City Directory Ward 6 page 118: John F. Watts, mariner, Stetson's Lane, Fore Street; and (3 doors away) Mary Watts, widow, Main Street.

1834 Portland City Directory Ward 3: Hannah Watts, milliner and dressmaker, Court Street. She never married is likely John F.' sister. Hannah is listed in Directories and the Census through 1869.

1837 Portland City Directory page 77: John Watts, mariner, house danforth, business maple and center; Hannah Watts, fancy goods, Court Street.

1840 Census Portland, Ward 6, Cumberland, Maine: John F. Watts: one male under 6, one male 10-15, one male 40-50; one female 15-20, one female 20-30; and one female 40-50. Olive, John's first wife, was still living when this census was taken.

1841 Portland Directory page 99: John Watts, mariner, home at Cross Street; Hannah Watts, fancy goods and millinery, Exchange Street; Mary Watts, widow, home on Union Street; William B. Watts, mariner, boarding at M. Watts. Note that Cross Street and Union Street are one block apart in the downtown area near the harbor.

I could not find any other records for William B. Watts. I have assumed he is John F.'s brother.

In April 1843 John's wife, Olive H. (Morton) died, leaving him with small children.

In May 1843 Sarah Jane Watts married George F. Palmer in Portland, Maine; and in June 1844 John F. Watts married his second wife, Eliza B. Small in a civil ceremony in Portland, Maine.

1846 Portland Reference Book, page 230: John F. Watts shipmaster, one at 326 Congress Street; Hannah Watts, millinery and fancy goods at 89 Exchange Street.

1850 Census Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, Maine page 341: John F. Watts (51) keeper of Portland Light, born Maine; Eliza B. (37) John F.'s second wife); William M. (15); Helen Gilman (5); and Isaac S. (2). The light house keeper's house was a two-room stone house connected to the lighthouse by a wooden shed. The house was improved after John and his family left.

1860 Census Ward 1, City of Portland, Cumberland, Maine, page 232: John F. Watts (57) ship master, born Maine, personal property $300; Eliza B. (46) born Maine; Helen G. (15); Issac S. (12) and Lizzie S. (8).

1866 Portland City Directory page 223: John F. Watts, shipmaster, living rear of 7 Grove Street; MISS Hannah Watts, 10 Quincy Lane. Whereas John Watts had lived near the harbor in Portland except when he served as lighthouse keeper at Cape Elizabeth, he now lived on the West side of Portland in a rural area.

1869 Portland City Directory page 250: Watts, John F. Shipmaster, rear 7 Grove Street. Jeremiah Ryan (married to John's daughter, Helen) currier, is also listed at this address.

1870 Census Portland, Cumberland, Maine, Ward 7, page 270: John F. Watts (71) retired ship master, born Maine, mother and father born USA; Eliza B. (58) self and parents born in Maine; Issac S. (22) clerk in store; in the same dwelling lived John F. and Eliza's daughter Helen and her family: Jeremiah Ryan (32) currier, born Ireland; Helen G. Ryan (24); and John F. Ryan (6 months).

1871 Portland City Directory: This directory lists taxpayers in Portland in 1797 as Edward Watts, and then John and George Watts. The population of Portland was less than 3,000. It is likely that this John Watts is the father of John F. Watts. The 1871 Portland City Directory does not list John F. Watts as a current tax payer.

John F. Watts was the keeper of the Portland Head Light on Cape Elizabeth from 1849 to 1853. Historian Edward Rowe Snow wrote, "Portland Head and its light seem to symbolize the State of Maine - - rocky coast, breaking waves, sparkling water and clear, pure salt air." The site is visited by 350,000 to 400,000 people each year because this lighthouse is "one of the most spectacularly beautiful lighthouses in New England."

"The lighthouse was first built in 1790-1791 when 18th century Maine was part of Massachusetts and Portland, known as Falmouth until 1786, was a booming port. In 1810 the lighthouse and keeper's house were in poor condition. Repairs were made and an outdoor oil shed was added. In 1813 a new lantern system of lamps and reflectors was installed, and a new keeper's house was built in 1816.

"New lamps and reflectors were installed at Portland Head in 1850. The following year an inspection found much to be desired at the lighthouse. The new reflectors were found to be badly scratched already. The house was leaky and cracking and the tower was being undermined by rats. The keeper was apparently poorly trained and had received no written instructions on the operation of the light. He had been forced to hire a man himself to train him for two days.

After John F. Watts left this post as lighthouse keeper, "Improvements were made in the following years. A fourth order Fresnel lens replaced the lamps and reflectors in 1855. A bell tower with a 1,500 pound bell was installed, the tower was lined with brick and a cast-iron spiral stairway was built."

Excerpts from the History of the Portland Head Light (www.lighthouse.cc/portlandhead).

I requested information from the National Archives re John Watt's service at the Lighthouse. On October 28, 2005 they replied that they had no records.

9/30/05 Notes on search for father and mother: Looked at all family history postings (167) for Watts in Portland and Watts in Falmouth. Eliminated Capt. David Watts of Gorham, ME and Dr. Edward Watts of Falmouth and Portland as names and dates of children do not match. Note that Dr. Edward Watts and wife Mary had a John Osborne Watts who is in early census along with John Watts who I think is John F.'s father. John F.'s mother was likely named Mary based on name of first daughter.

Also found a lot of information about early settler Henry Watts (1631) but his will indicates no children.

In 1714 the Pejepscot Company included a John Watts and others who paid 150 pounds for land on the river below the "20 mile Falls." No record of descendants.
