[1626] Arthur is at York, Maine in 1637; Constable, 1640 & 1657; Alderman, 1641; Provost Marshall, Lt. 1652 & 1658; 9 years Grand Juryman, 1649-69; Selectman, 1653 & 1655. For further information: "Four Generations of Bragdons," by Ivan E. Sawyer, in "Downeast Ancestry," Vol. 3, No. 4, pp. 18-21, in which Arthur Bragdon's baptism is given as 17-July-1586. Arthur had a grant in York, ME in 1666. He took the oath of allegiance 22 March 1680. See further information in "Penbscot Pioneers," Philip Howard Gray (Camden: Penobscot Press, 1994), pp. 24-25. Sheila Chlotiel Work (clogena@mail.man.1stnet.com) via Internet 4/97: In an article of which I have a copy it states "In a deposition Arthur Bragdon states his age which places his birth in 1597 and he was therefore 81 years old when he died. His wife's name was Mary, but there is nothing to suggest her family name or connection.....it further states A. B. left issue three sons. No daus. are known." This article has his signature and states he was undoubtedly a native of Stratford upon Avon, County Warwick. The men were butchers, same as followed by John Shakespeare, and Arthur Bragdon must have known the Bard of Avon, for he was 19 yrs. old when Shakespeare died. This statement is made on circumstantial evidence arising on the existence of a Bragdon family living in Shakespeare's parish, whose sons carried the names of Arthur and Thomas as did the York family and the only Bragdon family found in England which bore these Christian names. It is stated that another res. of Stratford was an early emigrant in Maine, settling in the adjoining town of Kittery. At this period business communication was common between towns in Warwickshire by means of navigation of the Severn, and Bristol was probably the port from which he emigrated. A.B. is first of record here in 1636 as witness to the sale of property [Deeds xxvi, 83]. This land was situated on Bass Cove. This grant was contested by Godfrey as to the extent of its bounds, and arbitrators Richard Vines and Henry Josselyn awarded the case in favor of Bragdon which was confirmed by Godfrey 1/21/1643, making the limits of his land on the NE to the path leading from the Plantation to Christian Point [Deeds x, 173]. He was constable of Agamenticus in 1640, and alderman 1641 under the first charter. [rec'd from Arlene E. McFarland, Whiting, Iowa - I looked her original letter in 1984 - and she states this was a photostat from an Ivan Sawyer sent to her in 1977 who used to live in another state and she lost contact with him - probably from a well-known book (possibly James Savage, but not sure which one).] The birth date conflicts as follows: the 1586 birth date was a christened date submitted in Downeast Ancestry, Vol. 3, Issue 4, Dec. 1979 - article contributed by Ivan E. Sawyer, 2807 Hansen Circle, Bellevue, Neb. 68005 [unknown when he contributed it]. He states that Arthur was son of Thomas Bragdon, Stratford on-Avon, England, d. fall of 1678, York, ME, will admitted 10/2/1678 - m. 1st-Joan Gold, no issued ; m. 2d - Mary ____, Ch. Thomas b. ab. 1640, York, Me., d. 10/14/1690, son Arthur b. 1645, York, Me., d. 10/14/1690 and Samuel Bragdon b. 1647, York-d. 1712; Birth dates also from "Pioneers on Maine River...," Wilbur D. Spencer; "Gen. Dict. of ME & NH"; "ME Hist. & Gen. Record," S. M. Watson. A 1598 birth date was from "Pioneers on Maine Rivers to 1651" Cf. http://www.one-barton-family.us/genealogy/viva/d1619.html and http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/l/e/d/Patricia-B-Ledoux/GENE6-0002.html (not verified). For more information, see "History of York, Maine," Banks, Charles Edward (Baltimore: Regional Publishing Co., 1967) Vol. I, pp.106-107, map opposite p. 254 (which shows his property along both side of the river and adjoining Bass Cove, and p. 325 which lists his grandson Arthur Bragdon as Captain of the company at York in 1724 during the 4th "Indian War"). Regarding Arhur's wife: For a discussion of her identity, see "Penobscot Pioneers" (1994), pp. 24-25. Her given name is from her waiver of dower rights on a deed in 1661 ("Gen. Dict. of ME & NH," p. 105). She may be Mary Garde, baptized 1 Feb 1627, daughter of Roger Garde who as a widower arrived at York by 11 June 1637. Mary is shown (without proof) as mother of Arthur's children in the LDS Church's Ancestral File P341-Q8. Cf. http://www.plantagenetorganization.com/plant/PS18_258.html and http://genforum.genealogy.com/bragdon. http://homepage.mac.com/sikora/page10/page10.html offers: "Arthur Bragdon - From Maine Pioneers, 1623-60 planter, York, constable in 1640; witnessed a deed July 3, 1647; took oath of allegiance to Mass. govt. 22 Nov. 1652, and was appointed lieutenant of the militia. 'Captains Grant and Bragdon are instructed to march to Narridgewock after the enemy, "Taking care that no Hostility be acted by you anywhere eastward of the Kennebeck River, but at Narridgewock, and that nothing be done on that side of the river contrary to the Cessation agreed on with the Penobscot Tribe. You may be very exact in your journal in noting down everything that is worthy of your observation, and send an account of your proceedings." (Letters of Col. Thomas Westbrook)'."
