[11405] Lucy m. Sir Marmaduke de Thwenge, Lord of Kilton Castle in Cleveland and Daneby, Yorkshire, M.P. in 1294. They had Sir Robert de Thwenge of Kilton Castle, d.s.p.m. legit, whose heir Lucy de Brus (dau. by unknown mother) m. by April 20, 1295 William, Lord Latimer. For descendants see "Ancestral Roots..." (Balt., 1992 - 7th ed.), p. 87-88.
Cicely is dau. of Richard de Weyland, of Blaxhall and Cockfield, co. Suffolk - per John S. Wurts, "Magna Charta," p. 2936. Richard de Weyland was b. ca. 1290 (aged 22 on 30 Oct 1312) to Sir John de Weyland. Sir John de Weyland and his son John had jointly acquired Clopton Manor, Co. Suffolk from whence he was summoned to serve against the Scots 25 May 1298. Sir John is son of Sir Thomas de Weyland and Ann de Colevill, daughter of Richard de Colevill; Sir Thomas was Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas and was summoned to Parliament 30 Sept 1283 at Shrewsbury.
A posting by John P. Ravilious in GEN-MEDIEVAL-L Archives 28 May 2002 offers: "Two sources of information have raised issues as to both the ancestry of the issue of Sir Thomas de Weyland, one-time Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench (d. in exile, 1291 or later), and the exact line of descent from Sir Thomas to Cecily de Weyland, heiress of her father (Sir Richard) and wife of Bartholomew de Burghersh, Lord Burghersh (d. 1369).
"The first source, alleging that the Weyland or Welond family 'had been the original Anglo-Norman grantees' of Tulachrothan and other lands in Ireland, states as follows:
"'1283 (Quinzaine of St. Martin). Final concord made in the King's court at Westminster, in the quinzaine of St. Martin, a. r. 12, before John de Lobetot, Roger of Leicester, and William de Burnton, justices between Thomas Welond, Margery his wife, Richard their son, complainants, and William le Gras, deforciant, whereby a plea of agreement was made between them, to wit, that the said William acknowledged the manor of Sobbit (i.e. Sodbbury) to be the right of the said Richard to hold to the said Thomas, Margery, and Richard, and the heirs body of Richard, of the lords of the fee for ever; with reversion in fee to John, son of Thomas Welond, after Thomas's and Margery's death, if Richard should have no heirs of his body.
"Warranty by William; and for this acknowledgement, warranty, fine and concord, the said Thomas granted in exchange to the said William all the lands, & c., which William previously had of the gift of William Welond, Thomas's brother, in Tulachrothan, Rathbolgan, Gurtuelem and Balydine, Ireland, to hold to the said William le Gras in fee; paying 1d. at Easter, and rendering for Thomas to the chief lords of the fee all other services belonging to the said tenements in Ireland.
"Warranty of the tenements in Ireland by Thomas and his heirs to the said William le Gras.'
"Evidently the Weyland family in fact had established rights in Ireland, to which Sir Thomas was heir, but over which there was some dispute. Sir Thomas had (according to Copinger) inherited the Suffolk manors of the family at Brandeston, Westerfield & c. from his elder brother William, who d. in 1274 (shortly after their father, Sir John). This is the first indication I have seen of such a connection between the Weyland family and tenancies in Ireland.
"The second source provides information as to connections of the le Gras (Crassus) and Weyland families to Chipping Sodbury, co. Glocs. The information is taken from the Calendar of Charter Rolls (CChR) and Rotuli Litterarum Clausarum (RLC), and provides the following as to charters for markets ("M") and fairs ("F") to be held at the manor of Chipping Sodbury :
"' M (Letter Close) Mon; mercatum, gr 12 Aug 1218, by K Hen III to William Crassus, the elder (RLC, i, p. 368). To be held at the manor. Mandate to the sh[eriff] of Gloucestershire to cause him to have it.
"M (Charter) Thurs; gr 24 May 1227, by K Hen III to William Crassus, the elder, kn[ight] (CChR, 1226-57, p. 43). Order to sh of Gloucestershire regarding the market, 5 Jun 1227 (RLC, ii, p. 188b).
"M (Charter) Mon; gr 6 Nov 1270, by K Hen III to William de Weylaund. To be held at the manor (CChR, 1257-1300, p. 156). It is possible that this was to replace the right to a Mon market granted in 1218.
"M (Charter) Thurs; gr 15 Nov 1280, by K Edw I to Thomas de Weyland. To be held at the manor (CChR, 1257-1300, p. 236).
"F (Charter) f+7, John the Baptist (24 Jun); gr 24 May 1227, by K Hen III to William Crassus, the elder, kn (CChR,
1226-57, p. 43). Order to sh of Gloucestershire regarding the fair, 5 Jun 1227 (RLC, ii, p. 188b).
"F (Charter) vfm, Decollation of John the Baptist (29 Aug); gr 6 Nov 1270, by K Hen III to William de Weylaund
(CChR, 1257-1300, p. 156). To be held at the manor.
"F (Charter) vfm, Nativity of John the Baptist (24 Jun); gr 15 Nov 1280, by K Edw I to Thomas de Weyland. To be
held at the manor (CChR, 1257-1300, p. 236)..... This was presumably the fair on John the Baptist recorded on 20 Dec 1375, held by Edward le Despenser, kn, lately deceased (CIPM, xiv, p. 219). '
"It is interesting to note that William de Weyland (d. 1274) is found having charters to hold a fair and a market 'at the manor' in Chipping Sodbury in 1270. This may indicate that (A) his father Sir John in fact died before 6 Nov 1270; (B) that his rights in Chipping Sodbury derived from marriage, and not from inheritance; or (C) that the manor of Chipping Sodbury (or a moiety therefore) had been given him by his father, or through inheritance from his mother, prior to his father's death.
"Issues & Questions:
"1. Thomas de Weyland is given by Copinger as having wed Margaret de Moese, daughter and heiress of Thomas de Moese, of Campsey, Suffolk. Outside of the Weyland and Moese surnames, and the various manors held by those families as identified by Copinger (Brandeston, Westerfield & c.) no earlier family connections have been ascertained.
"Does anyone on the list have information that would confirm, or explain, the connection of the Weyland family to that of William le Gras (aka William 'Crassus') ?
"2. If appears (from prior posts, and the descent of the manor of Rouse Hall, Suffolk) that Richard de Weyland, son of Thomas, did in fact die without direct heirs, and that the manor of Sodbury (Chipping Sodbury), co. Glocs. reverted to his brother John de Weyland. This would explain the association with Edward le Despenser in 1375. In particular, see the
SGM posts by Douglas Richardson et seq., incl. the thread New MC Line: Clare-Breuse-Weyland-Burghersh-Despenser, December 2000. Does anyone of the list have evidence that either proves or disproves this determination?"
