[20545] The LDS Church's IGI file (not verified) states that Robert is son of John de Burger (d. 1328) and Helen de Colchester (d. 1249), but this does not seem correct if the death dates of each parent are right. "The Dictionary of National Biography, Vol. 6" on the web at http://www.manninghouse.co.uk/FamilyTree/ReferenceBooks/NationlBiograhyVol6.htm offers: "Bourchier or Boussier, Robert (d. 1349), chancellor, the eldest son of John Bourchier [q.v.], a judge of common pleas, began life in the profession of arms. He was returned as a member for the county of Essex in 1330, 1332, 1338, and 1339. In 1334 he was chief justice of the king's bench in Ireland. He was present at the battle of Cadsant in 1337. he sat in the parliament of 1340 ('Rolls of Parliament,' ii. 113). When on his return to England the king displaced his ministers, he committed the great seal, which had long been held by Archbishop Strafford and his brother, the Bishop of Chichester, alternately, to Bourchier, who thus became, on 14 Dec. 1340, the first lay chancellor. His salary was fixed at 500l,. besides the usual fees. In the struggle between the king and the archbishop, Bourchier withheld the writ of summons to the ex-chancellor, interrupted his address to the bishops in the Painted Chamber, and on 27 April 1431 urged him to submit to the king. When the parliament of 1431 extorted from the king his assent to their petitions that the account of the royal officers should be audited, and that the chancellor and other great officers should be nominated in parliament, and should swear to obey the laws, Bourchier declared that he had not assented to these articles, and would not be bound by them, as they were contrary to his oath and to the laws of the realm. He nevertheless exemplified the statute, and delivered it to parliament. He resigned his office on 29 Oct. He was summoned to parliament as a peer in 16 Edward III. In 1346 he accompanied the king on his expedition to France. He was in command of a large body of troops, and fought at Crecy in the first division of the army. He married Margaret, daughter and heiress of Sir Thomas Preyers. he founded a college at Halstead for eight priests; but it probably never contained so many as its revenues were very small. The king granted him the right of free warren, and license to crenellate his house. He died of the plague in 1349, and was buried at Halstead. [24265] Mary r. as a widow at 4705 Stuart Ave., Richmond, VA.
[19298] A. F. Bridges wrote to D. E. Piper 24 Nov 1911 that Susan's parents probably emigrated from Surrey Co., NC "along with hundreds of Quaker families, who were so numerous as to organize the Western Yearly Meeting which is still in Plainfield." Bridges also reports that the pastor of Salem Methodist Church when it was chartered in 1829 was Joseph Tarkington, father-in-law of Lt. Gov. Will Cumback and grandfather of Booth Tarkington, the author. He states that George and Susan r. briefly in IL but returned to IN, 4 miles SE of Poland. IGI (not verified) lists Susanna Staley, b. 17 March 1804 in Randolph Co., NC to Conrad Staley and wife Catherine Smith as the only "Susan Staley" born in NC between 1780 and 1820. Ancestral File (of the Mormon Church - not verified) reports that Conrad (married to Catherine Smith in 1800 in Guilford Co., NC) is son of Martin Staley (b. ca. 1747 in Germany, d. 31 March 1817 in Randolph Co., NC) and wife Charity Moretz (b. ca. 1750 in Germany, d. 5 April 1817 in Randolph Co., NC, m. ca. 1777). A Conrad Staley is on the 1815 tax list in Randolph Co., NC with 636 acres located in "Stinking Quarters", the NE corner of the county, north of Liberty and in present-day Liberty Twp. A Conrood [sic] Staley is on the 1799 tax list with 136 acres. A Conroad Staley is a signer of the 1773 petition to relocate the Guilford Co. Court House closer to the southern section of the county - this section became Randolph Co. six years later. The old former Richland Lutheran Church cemetery along state route 2418 about four miles north of Liberty contains many Staley graves, some from the early 19th century.
