[4499] Welf II was also Count of Altorf and Ravensburg. Encyclopaedia Britannica (1956, 23:494) states: "The first member of this house [of Welf] of whom there is certain evidence was the Bavarian count Welf I, a contemporary of Charlemagne and of Louis the Pious. The kings of Burgundy who ruled until 1038 and the West-Frankish magnate known as Hugh the Abbot (d.886) were descended from him."

[3800] Conan "le Tort" took Nantes in 990; descends from a Conan known as Cynan Medriadog, Prince of Albaine and Powys, who died in 421 (m.388 Dareara, sister of St. Patrick & dau. of Calphurnius) - the legends also have Cynan leaving to found a colony in Armorica, France in 384. Legend also traces Conan's line from ancient Welsh "kings." As Count of Rennes he subdued the entire province and his son and successor, Geoffrey, was first to assume the title "Duke of Brittany." The dukes were crowned at Rennes. See "Medieval English Ancestors of Certain Americans," Carl Boyer III (Santa Clarita, CA, 2001), p. 93.
