[7594] "The Sentinel [Carlisle, Pennsylvania], 29 November 1966," p. 1: "A Carlisle insurance agent was fatally injured late yesterday afternoon when he accidentally shot himself while hunting deer in the North Mountain in North Middleton Township. Charles J. McKain, 35, of 527 C Street, was dead on arrival of a Carlisle ambulance at Carlisle Hospital. Cumberland County Coroner Edward A. Haegele reported death was due to a gunshot wound of the chest. He said an autopsy was scheduled today. State police reported McKain was going up the mountain near the Long's Gap Road when he slipped on wet leaves and fell. His rifle discharged and the bullet struck him in the left chest. McKain was with a party of hunters, including Dr. Frank S. Bryan, Carlisle, his brother-in-law. They separated and had agreed to meet later in the afternoon. When McKain failed to show up at the appointed time, the party began a search and found him about 5 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 6:18 p.m. Haegele released the body to the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 South Hanover Street. McKain was born on Aug. 5, 1931, at Fairmont, W. Va.. the son of Charles and Mina Teichart McKain, now of Rochester, N.Y. He had lived in Carlisle for 10 years. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the Carlisle Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was an agent for the Prudential Insurance Company. He served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1953. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Donna L. Willhide McKain; two sons, Charles J.; III, and Todd W.; a daughter, Kelly A., all at home; a sister, Mrs. Frank S. Bryan, Carlisle and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Mary McKain, Monongah, W. Va."
