[5948] Fought the Danes in England, then returned to Norway in 1015 and declared himself king (with the support of local kings of the Uplands). "In 1016 he defeated Earl Sveyn, hitherto the virtual ruler of Norway, at the battle of Nesje, and within a few years had won more power than had been enjoyed by any of his predecessors. He had annihilated the petty kings of the South, had crushed the aristocracy, enforced the accpetance of Christianity throughout the kingdom, asserted his suzerainty in the Orkney Islands, had humbled the king of Sweden and married his daughter in his despite, and had conducted a successful raid on Denmark." The nobles revolted, Olaf fled to Russia, and on his return was killed in battle. "After his death his cunning and cruelty...were forgotten, and his service to his church and country remembered. Miracles were worked at his tomb, and in 1164 he was canonized and was declared the patron saint of Norway...." - Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1956 Edition, 16:759. Olaf (II) is also known as "The Fat." He is commemorated in the children's song, "London Bridge is Falling Down"; he tore down this bridge. He was slain during the eclipse of 31 August 1030 fighting Knut (Canute), King of England and Denmark, according to "Ancestral Roots..." (Balt., 1992) 243A-21. His feast day is July 29th.
