He fought in the King Richard's Third Crusade in 1190. He fought in the siege of Jaffa in 1192. He held the office of Keeper of Marlborough Castle in 1194. He held the office of Sheriff of Essex from 1198 to 1199. He held the office of Chief of the Itinerant Justices of the Forest before 1199. He held the office of Forester in 1203, for life (possibly Chief Forester of all England). He held the office of Treasurer before 27 January 1208/9.
