[1518] Canon Bouchard of St. Pierre de Lille was Archdeacon of Laon. One account states that he was beheaded in 1221 {-"Royal Ancestors of Magna Charta Barons," Carr P. Collins (Dallas, 1959), p. 29; Collins also states that he was Margaret of Hainaut's first husband (p. 132)}. {His parents are from "The Plantagenet Ancestry," W.H.Turton (Balt.: Gen.Pub.Co., 1968.)} See http://www.mythopedia.info/ancestry-avesnes.htm and http://home.wxs.nl/~voort359/home3avesn.html for more information. [21522] Reference: Dunklin, Ethel Hastings Scruggs, "Scruggs genealogy : with a brief history of the allied families Briscoe, Dial, Dunklin, Leake and Price" (New York: Laplante & Dunklin Print. Co., 1912), p. 22. Family notes, apparently by Sigsbee Scruggs, state that Richard Scruggs is from Bedfordshire and "landed in James City, Kent County VA . . . with 2 sons, Richard and Henry." LDS Church's unverified Ancestral File gives a son, Richard. The name Scruggs MAY derive from Scroggs - Black's "Dictionary of Scottish Names" gives: "SCROGGS. From the lands of Scrogges in the barony of Stobo, Peebleshire. Robert [de Scroggs] lost his life in the service of David de Lyne, and because of that his son Simon had a grant of lands of Scrogges, c. 1208." Scroggs is a Scandinavian-derived word for scrub bushes, or scrub land. Richard Timothy Conroy (5016 Sixteenth St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20011) shared in 2003: "My mother was a Scruggs descending from immigrant Richard through his son Henry. I can take you back a few generations to Thomas Scruggs of Patmore Hall, Albury. His son was Francis Scruggs, whose second wife was Diamise Snell and whose will was proven in November, 1585, and showed the date of his marriage as November 12, 1565. Also mentioned were eleven children. One of these was John Scruggs, residing at Patmore Hall and presumably in our line of descent. John had a son, Thomas Scruggs, also of Patmore Hall, who married Jane Brown, daughter of Weston Brown. They had at least two sons, Alexander and Richard who was our immigrant. Richard was transported to the James River Colony in 1655 by John Linge of James City County and Henry Barlow. Richard received Crown grants totaling several thousand acres in James City and New Kent Counties. [My information says these grants from King George II, but that seems too early for the Hanovers.] Richard received some of the grants for transporting other colonists and in this activity was associated with Charles Woodington, Gerorge Morris, George Gilbert and Thomas Mitchell [about whom I know nothing]. Richard bought land [300 acres] from John Lynge on N. side of 'Chycohominy' River. Beyond this I follow the line from Richard's son Henry to Henry Jr...to Julius to Richard, to John, to Dr. Richard Francis Scruggs, to Frank, to Elizabeth (my mother)." The ancesral line is from Conroy's notes which refer to Waters' "Genealogical Gleanings in England," XLVII:532. Conroy reports that "Cavaliers and Pioneers, Patent Book 3" contains an entry refering to Richard Scruggs in the James City Colony. However, Clayton Moses shared on the ancestry.com message board in July, 2003: "I can't find the link between Richard Scruggs and the Scruggs family in England. There was a Richard Scruggs at Patmere Hall --the right age and time. But, the Scruggs Family Association (my brother is a member) proved that he never left England." Becky Bass Bonner & Josephine Lindsay Bass at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mysouthernfamily offer: "Richard Scruggs, Gentleman, an Englishman of Bedfordshire, came to America in 1655, being transported by John Linge, of James City County, and Henry Barlow. He settled in the province of Virginia, where he became a large land owner, receiving Crown Grants from King George II in James City and New Kent Counties, aggregating several thousand acres, some patents being granted him for the transportation of persons to assist in colonizing the Province. He was closely associated in these grants, with Charles Woodington, George Morris, George Gilbert and Thomas Mitchell, whose plantation was adjoining." A Richard Scruggs served on the jury 17 June 1673 in New Kent Co., VA - "The Virginia Genealogist, Vol. 20," (1976), p. 173. Also see http://www.scruggsfam.com.
