He found a formidable adversary in the able and warlike, William, who, become bishop of Utrecht in 1054, was determined to recover the lost possessions of his see; and in I058, in alliance with Hanno, archbishop of Cologne, Egbert, margrave of Brandenburg, the bishop of Liege and others, invaded the Frisian territory. At first success attended the invaders and many places fell into their hands, but finally they were surprised and defeated near Dordrecht. The Counts of Guelders and Louvain were among the prisoners that fell into the hands of Floris. The attack was renewed in 1061. In her talk, 'Verse Forms of Future,' Miss Jackson gave encouragement to budding poets when she commented that beginners can usually start publishing a small way when they begin writing, but would be apt to starve in a garret if they depended on poetry earnings for their livelihood. Under the patronage system, the speaker said, a struggling poet or creative worker had the satisfaction of knowing his food and shelter were assured. Miss Jackson said that she agreed with Milton's remark that every poet should travel and that it was particularly true if they could travel to California, where she has found great beauty and inspiration. In the receiving line at the reception were Lyra LuVaile, president and founder of the LuVailean Poetry club; Mrs. Anne Swedlund, chairman of the hospitality committee, and Mmes. Elizabeth Tracy and Hally Nay MacKay. Vocal selections were given by Winifred Burton Paul of Los Angeles, president of the California Federation of Chaparral Poets, accompanied at the piano by Miss LuVaile. Among guests introduced were Ethel McDermott Johnston and Edith Duncan, Long Beach; Eva Lynn, Los Angeles; Agnes Davenport Bond, Grace Ladd and Ethel Gerrard of Santa Ana; Lavinia Watkins, president and founder of the San Diego Poets association; Mr. and Mrs. Foster Rhodes Jackson of Chino, brother and sister-in-law of the speaker and Kingsbury T. Jackson of York, also a brother; and visitor from South Dakota, Mrs. Esther Kuntzson." She r. in 1976 at Big Spring, TX.

[45358] The 6 April 1940 federal census in San Bernardino, San Bernardino Co., CA lists Foster, age 56 (b. in PA), "custodian engineer" at a junior high school with wife Lelia H. (56, b. in OH) and children: Maureen M. (26, b. in OH, "beauty operator, beauty salon"), Gene C. (20, b. in Arkansas, trumper player in an orchestra), Jeamice (17, b. in CA) & Jeanette( 17, b. in CA). The 5 April 1930 federal census lists the family in San Jose, Santa Clara Co., CA where Foster is a real estate salesman. The 1900 federal census in Toboyne Twp., Perry Co., PA lists him in his parents' household as a salesman in a general store, age 17. Foster registered for the draft 12 September 1918 in Yavapai Co., AZ. "The San Bernardino County Sun, 21 November 1978," p. 33: "Foster C. Willhide, 95, a 22-year resident of San Bernardino, died Saturday in a Laguna Hills hospital. He was born in New Germantown, Pa., and was a 54 year resident of California. He was a retired poultry rancher and a Protestant. Survivors include six daughters, Anne Benson of San Bernardino, Doris Davison of San Jose, Maureen Reynolds of Lakewood, Ruth Simmons of Laguna Beach, Jeanette Lewis of Capistrano Beach and Jeanice Garner of Newport Beach; two sons, Foster of Redlands, and Gene of Laguna Beach; a sister, Ora of Kingsville, Ohio, 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Graveside services are scheduled Wednesday day in Montecito Memorial Park."
