"He was born at Easton, Massachusetts 11 October 1763 [i] ; died at Marietta, Ohio, 25 December 1808, unmarried. Anselm was the eldest son of Colonel Benjamin, an Original Member of the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati, and Huldah (White)Tupper. Benjamin Tupper, stating that His Excellency Gen. Washington had expressed his opinion that all vacancies which existed before Nov. 1, 1780, ought to be filled in order to bring about a settlement of ranks as authorized under the new arrangement for the army, and recommending that certain officers be promoted to fill vacancies in the 11th Mass. Regt.; said Tupper, Ensign, to be promoted to Lieutenant, his appointment to date from Sept. 1, 1780; ordered in Council Dec. 15, 1780, that warrants be issued to said officers; also, Ensign, Capt. After the war he was engaged as a surveyor of the Northwest Territory (Ohio) with his father; removed in the first group of settlers to Marietta, Ohio, 7 April 1788, with his parents. He was the first school teacher in Marietta; was said to have been proficient in the classical languages and in mathematics, and to have possessed a polished demeanor. Tiring of frontier life, he went on a long voyage: down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers; across the Atlantic; through the Mediterranean to Trieste, Austria-Hungary; returned home several years later.
Anselm was an Original Member of the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati from 1783 until 1808. He was granted a Bounty Land Warran 1 April 1790. [ii] A portrait of Anselm was reproduced in Chafflins History of Easton, Mass. (1886) on p. 256.
