Richard, affectionately known as Dick, Rick or Dickie, was the son of Kenneth and Grethe 'Bray' Howard of Castine. Richard was part of the last graduating class at Castine High School in 1961. He served our country for eight years in the United States Air Force during the height of the Vietnam War. In 1971, he received an associate degree in building construction from SMVTI in South Portland and went to work for Brockway Smith Co., from where he retired after 30 years. Richard loved his family and spending time with them more than anything. He had many talents, some of which included making furniture and picture frames. He and Sharon were passionate about their gardens and even created a special park at their house for their grandchildren. Richard was always known for his wit and sense of humor, which would lighten up any situation. His passing leaves a void in the lives of his loved ones. Richard is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Sharon (Pooler) Howard; son David and wife, Caryn, of Bangor; grandchildren Patrick, Kate and Ryan; sister Janet Sundman and husband, Robert, of Stonington, Conn.; sisters-in-law Sonya Harriman, Judie York, Annette Palanda and husband, Joe, Helen Wardwell, Debbie Tymoczko and husband, Bill; brothers-in-law Jerry Cieo and wife, Jo-Ann, William Pooler, Forrest (Bobo) Pooler and wife, Pier, and Greg Pooler and wife, Debbie; and a very special cousin, Raymond Howard, and his wife, Sue. Richard was predeceased by his parents and by his very special lifelong friend Rudy York, who was also his brother-in-law."

The Watkins family has a very large plot in the back corner of Crystal Lake Cemetery surrounded by a black iron fence.
