[7478] "Ancestral Roots..." (Balt.,1992) 224-29: "Earl of Buchan, Constable of Scotland, Justiciar...son of William Comyn and Margaret, Countess of Buchan." He and Elizabeth had Elizabeth Comyn, d. by 17 Feb 1329, m. Gilbert de Umfreville, Earl of Angus (b. 1244, d. by 13 Oct 1307), son of Gilbert de Umfreville and Maud, dau. of Malcolm, Earl of Angus. Cf. http://www.electricscotland.com/webclans/earldoms/chapter2s1.htm which states: "Alexander, Earl of Buchan, was present at the great meeting of the Estates, held at Scone on the 5th of February, 1284, in which the Kings granddaughter, Margaret, the Maid of Norway, was declared to be heiress of the Crown of Scotland. On the death of Alexander III. in 1286, the Earl of Buchan was appointed one of the Guardians of Scotland for the districts on the north of the Forth: while John Comyn, Lord of Badenoch, was elected one of the Guardians of the kingdom on the south of the Forth. At this time the Comyns were the most powerful family in Scotland. Buchanan says, in his History of Scotland, that 'the power of this family has never been equalled in Scotland, either before or since.'"

[6987] http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~pmcbride/james/f020.htm#T62 [not verified] offers: "Giles de Badlesmere, his heir, 2n^!baron, not withstanding his father's fate, found such favor from the king, that he had a speciic precept to the keeper of the wardrobe, in the Tower, to deliver to him all his father's harneys, as well coat-armours as others. He doing homage in the 7th year of King Edward III., although not then at majority, had livery of his lands, and the next year attended the king in an expedition into Scotland, in which service he was engaged the three ensuing years. He was summoned to parliament from January 22, 1336, to August 18, 1337. He married Elizabeth Montacute, daughter of William de Montacute, Earl of Salisbury; but d.s.p., in 1338, the barony of Badlesemere fell into abeyance between his sisters and co-heiresses, and it so continues among their descendants and representatives. The Barony of Badlesmere was assumed, without any legal right by the deceased lord's eldest sister, Mauud Countess of Oxford, and the earl her husband, and was retained in that family until the demise of John de Vere, 14th earl, without male issue, in the reign of King Henry VIII., when it was certified, April 5, 1626, to have fallen into abeyance between that nobleman's four sisters."
