[1857] http://www.thepeerage.com/p11648.htm: "He succeeded to the title of 6th Earl of Arundel [E., c. 1138] on 27 November 1243, de jure, but he appears to have never used this title. On 26 May 1244 he obtained possession of his paternal estates in Shropshire by payment of £1,000. He fought in the wars against the Welsh in 1258. He gained the rank of Battle of Lewes in 1264 in the service of the where he was taken prisoner, along with the King." Cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_FitzAlan,_6th_Earl_of_Arundel.

INDEX

[17976] Alfonso XI married his first cousin, Maria of Portugal. He had a son with an unknown mistress, Henry ("Enrique II") of Trastamara who reigned 1369-1379. Alfonso XI joined Alfonso IV of Portugal to crush the resurgent Moors in Spain in the Battle of the Salado River, 30 October 1340. (Alfonso XI was only two years old when his father died, and the succession was disputed by an uncle, a grand-uncle and a third cousin of the infant heir - the pretenders established centers of authority in Leon, Toledo and Seville.) [21000] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hesbaye offers: "Hesbaye (Latinized as Hesbania in medieval documents, modern French Hesbaye, modern Dutch Haspengouw), is the region in the south of the Belgian province of Limburg containing the cities of Tongeren, Sint-Truiden, Bilzen and Borgloon. The region also covers the east of the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant and Walloon Brabant (with cities like Tienen, Landen and Zoutleeuw) as well as the northwestern part of the province of Liège. From the seventh century it was an important fief in the northwestern marches of the Merovingian kingdom of Austrasia."

Gene Paine (gepaine@msn.com) reports in 2006 that Christian Hootman was one of the men "sold by the Prince of Hesse to King George, the third, of England to the end and for the purpose of fighting the colonists in America who were at war with the mother country, striving for their independence. His father was a wealthy malster and could have procured the young man's release but for a difference between them over a love affair of the junior Hootman." Christian was wounded at the Battle of Trenton 25 Dec 1776 and was captured by the Continental Army.

A file in Ancestry.com in 2012 offers: "Christian Hootman, founder of the Hootman family in America, was born in Germay in the mid-1700's. Kidnapped and sold to King George the Third of England, he arrived on America soil in 1776 as a mercenary to fight against the colonists. After being wounded at the battle of Trenton and taken prisoner by Washington's forces, Christian Hootman joined forces. Christian Hootman joined forces with the Colonial army serving in a Pennsylvania regiment. At the end of the war, he was given 800 acres of land on the border of Pennsylvania and West Virginia where he settled, married and raised eight children."

Another file in Ancestry.com in 2012 offers: "Brief Historical Sketch of Christian Hootman and His Son Jacob Hootman and Their Descendants 1757- 1977 , Personal copy, Iowa, By Mary E. Hootman (1912-1914)

"Christian Hootman, the founder of the Hootman family in America was born 1757 in the Principality of Hessen Castle, Greman (sic) Empire. He was a fine drummer boy and when about 16 was kidnapped by the Prince of Hess and sold to King George the third of England to the end and for the purpose of fighting the colonists in America, who were at war with the Mother Country, striving for thier Independence.

"His father (Johann Heinrich Huthmann) was a wealthy man and could have procured the young man's release but for a difference between them he was take in charge by officers an dupon his refusal to join the troops he was given thirty lashes for three consecutive days, after which he consented to obey the commands of his superiors. Neverless before embarkin gwith the soldiers he said to his father, 'You forced me to take the lashes, I'll go, but I will never fire a gun against the Americans and I will never return the the Father land.' And he never did. On the morning of December 25, 1776 he was struck by a gun carriage and suffered a a fracture of one leg. During the early morning General Washington an dhis Continentals had crossed the Delaware and surprised Rall's Camp capturing the entire band.

"Christian Hootman was one of those taken by the Americans, but they treated him so well that after three months he had so far recovered, that he reenlisted--but not with the British bu with a Virginian regiment, and acted as drummer boy until the close of the war.

"He settled in Virginia and recieved (sic) from the state eight hundred acers (sic) of land. It was located on the head water of Buffalo Creel (sic), in what is now know as WEst Vriginina, Washington county, Pennsylvania. Here he married Miss (Anna) Revenaugh and reared a large family of sturdy sons and daughters. The names were: John, Jacob, David, Henry, Christian, Catherin, Christeena(Christiana) and Mary.

"John married Jane Childers, to this union were born 11 children: John J., Jane, Mary Ann, Christopher, Jonathon, Diana, Robert, Lucinda Catherine, David and Joseph.

"Catherine married Mr. Shelby. Christeena married Mr. Miller and Mary married Mr. Deeds.

"Their mother passed away and later he (Christian) remarried but because of certain disagreements between the children and the second wife the peace of the home was disturbed and some were obliged to seek other shelter.

"The Van Buren Branch of the Hootman Family.

"Jacob Hootman, the second son of Crhistian Hootman, was born October 18, 1780, was married to Christiana Shook in 1807. She was born July 17, 1795. Their children were: Hannah, Susan, Crhistopher, Jacob, Elizabeth, William, Catherine, David, Sarah, and Henry. In 1810, Jacob Hootman moved in cart drawn by a yoke of oxen from Washington County, Pennsylvania to Harrision county, Ohio near New Rumley where they reared their large family. In 1839 they came wit their family across Indiana and Illinois and located about two miles north and eat of Mt. Zion, Van Buren county, Iowa where they took up land and resided until they passed away at a good old age. They were members of the Lutheran Church in Ohio and also attended the same church in Iowa. [28917] http://www.thepeerage.com reports "Sir Walter Scott wrote that 'she was a woman of unbounded beneficence to, and even beyond, the extent of her princely fortune. She had a masculine courage, and great firmness in enduring affliction, which pressed on her with continued and successive blows in her later years.'"
