[1478] Lionel was married before age four to Elizabeth, heiress of Clare, whence his title, Duke of Clare(nce). He was also Earl of Ulster by appointment of his father, King Edward III, landing at Dublin in September 1361 as governor of Ireland. He was created Duke of Clarence in November, 1362. In 1363 his father tried in vain to secure for Lionel the succession to the crown of Scotland. Unsuccessful in subduing Ireland, despite holding a parliament at Kilkenny which passed a famous statue in 1366, he withdrew to England. He married (2) 28 May 1368 Violante, only daughter of Galeazzo Visconti, Lord of Pavia; "some months were then spent in festivities, during which Lionel was taken ill at Alba, where he died.... The poet Chaucer was at one time a page in Lionel's household." {-Encycl.Brit.,'56,5:757.}
