White, one of the best known and most highly respected citizens of the lower end, died of a heart attack at his home in Cove below Duncannon, on Monday morning, in his 75th year if his age. Mr. White took ill on New Year's evening. It was soon manifest that he could not recover and those of his children away from home were sent for. He died at three o'clock Monday morning, surrounded by his sorrowing family. James M. White was a son of Thomas and Mary (Taylor) White and was born Sept. 18, 1825. He was educated in the public schools and was a sucessful farmer. He also tried his hand in timber cutting, where he was one of the major supplier of rail road ties for Pennsylvania Rail Road as well as Northern Central Rail Road. He also mined coal and iron ore from the hills around Cove. It was advertised in the Duncannon Record when he purchased a cider press, stating that he would press apples for his nieghbors at a reasonable price. For the past eighteen years he has been living a retired life life. In political faith he was a Democrat and was one of the canidates for County Commissioner in 1887. He was a member of the Evergreen Lodge, No. 205, I.O.O.F. and Perry Council No. 57, O.U.A.M. of Duncannon. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and at the time of his death was an elder. The deceased was married October 17, 1850, to Sarah E., daughter of William and Hanna (Milliken) White. Their children Are; Mary Habaub, Thomas W. White and Alexander R. White, Mrs. White died and Mr. White remarried, his second wife being Mrs. Chtraring (Shaffer) Coup. By this union the following children were born; Sarah C. White, Addie M. White, and James S. White. Mr. White was a gentleman of the old school--courteous, generous, and hospitable. He was one of the prominent men of his community and was closely identified woht the history of progress of his section of the county. His death is sincerely mourned by a wide circle of friends and his family have the sympathy of all in the loss of a kind and loving husband and father. Mr. White was buried in the family cemetery on his farm, which is also shared with other families in the Cove."
