Ancestry.com offers: "Alexander Name Meaning - Scottish, English, German, Dutch; also found in many other cultures: from the personal name Alexander, classical Greek Alexandros, which probably originally meant 'repulser of men (i.e. of the enemy)', from alexein 'to repel' + andros, genitive of aner 'man'. Its popularity in the Middle Ages was due mainly to the Macedonian conqueror, Alexander the Great (356-323 bc) - or rather to the hero of the mythical versions of his exploits that gained currency in the so-called Alexander Romances. The name was also borne by various early Christian saints, including a patriarch of Alexandria (ad c.250-326), whose main achievement was condemning the Arian heresy. The Gaelic form of the personal name is Alasdair, which has given rise to a number of Scottish and Irish patronymic surnames, for example McAllister. Alexander is a common forename in Scotland, often representing an Anglicized form of the Gaelic name."

[1524] "...the ideal king of the middle ages. An accomplished knight, physically strong in spite of his ascetic practices, fearless in battle, heroic in adversity, of imperious temperament, unyielding when sure of the justness of his cause, energetic and firm, he was indeed `every inch a king.' Moreover, he was a great saint, devout without excessive bigotry, submissive to the church but interested in the doctrinal controversies of his time. Above all, his constant care of justice and order altered the character of the Capetian monarchy...he reinforced the royal authority, to which his own person imparted a prestige never attained by it before, while his power verged on absolutism." He was canonized in 1297. {-Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1956, 14:415-16} {A very readable and descriptive chapter about him is included in "Seven Medieval Kings," Joseph Dahmus (Doubleday & Co., 1967).} Compton's Encyclopedia (American Online, 1995) reports: "Louis IX (born 1214, ruled 1226-70), called St. Louis, was one of the most virtuous and heroic kings of France. He was the dutiful son of Louis VIII and his queen, Blanche of Castile. Blanche bravely faced numerous revolts of powerful feudal nobles during her son's youth. Louis IX had all the good qualities and few of the bad ones of the age in which he lived. Indeed, his virtues were so remarkable that after his death the Roman Catholic church declared him a saint. Louis's acts of piety, such as wearing a haircloth shirt, fasting, and waiting on lepers, were usually performed in private. To the world he was a fearless knight, thoroughly trained in the art of war, and a conscientious, just, and able king--usually good-humored and kindly, but at times impatient and angry. He was a strong ruler, who greatly strengthened the royal power. He improved the government by appointing local officials who were responsible to him for the administration of justice, the collection of taxes, and the government of their districts. He encouraged the people to appeal to him if the nobles oppressed them or if his officials were unjust. He improved the administration of justice by abolishing trials by combat and by using in his courts the new lawyers, trained in the Roman law, in place of the churchmen who formerly were the only people who could read and write. These reforms not only benefited the peasants but also checked the power of the nobles, who, according to a writer of the time, "undertook nothing against their king, seeing clearly that the hand of the Lord was with him." St. Louis made two crusades--to Egypt and the Holy Land, from 1248 to 1254, on which he was captured and held for ransom by Muhammadans; and to Tunis, in 1270, where he died of the plague." [49763] "Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine], 21 Deceber 2021": "Jeffery Linwood Soper, age 64, passed away peacefully at his home in Orland, Maine, on December 9, 2021, surrounded by his family. The journey began on April 26, 1957, in Castine, ME, born the son of Howard E. Soper and wife, Marjorie D. (Brown) Soper. Jeff graduated from Bucksport High in 1975, and then went on to start his career in St. Regis Paper, where he would continue as a rigger and millwright for 30 years, until illness took him out of that line of work and then began his 'fishman' career selling lobster and haddock out of his home and sharing many recipes, stories and friendships with his clients. Jeff was a true hero and at 17 years old in a tragic campfire at Rocky Pond while in high school, he went into a burning camp and saved his best friend by carrying him out completely engulfed in flame burning himself severely in the process. He also saved a man choking in the mill. Jeff was an avid outdoorsman and had a tremendous love with fishing and hunting and was always the life of any group he encountered. Jeff leaves behind his beloved wife of 44 years, Robin; their 2 sons, Christopher Soper and fiancé, Jenny, and Casey Soper and wife, Helen; a daughter, Jennifer Saulnier and wife, Becky; sisters, Joyce Hanscom, Julie and Dick Philbrook, Barbara and John Roach, and Brenda and Tim Fowler; and his pride and joy grandchildren, Cameron, Samuall, Lillian Soper, Evan and Jacob Kelly."
