A Light in the Valley, A History of the Codorus Church of the Brethren, by William L. Gould, published by the Codorus Church of the Brethren, Loganville, PA, 1976. I obtained a copy of this book from the church.
pg 120 - David Y. Brillhart - David Y. Brillhart was born March 3, 1855 on the old Brillhart homestead east of Loganville. He was the son of Jacob and Rebecca Yost Brillhart. He married Mary Alice Herbst, and they made their home of the ancestal lands that had been warrented to Peter Brilhard (note the change in spelling), great-great grandfather of David. For five generations this farm had been in the Brillhart family.
The Codorus congregation called him to the ministry in 1886 and on September 20, 1900, he was ordained to the Eldership. For fifteen years he served as the presiding Elder of the congregation.
In addition to being a competent farmer, David Y. Brillhart served as director of the Glen Rock Trust Company, a director of the Western Mutual Fire Insurance Company and a trustee of the Heilig Wire Company of York. For a period of time he was president of the Board of the Brethren Children's Home at Carlisle. In a day prior to the well-stocked drug stores of today, Brother Brillhart was also a dispenser of medications. He kept a supply of home remedies and sold them to those who called upon him.
On September 8, 1929, death came to him quite suddenly as he was chatting with visiting neighbors. He was buried in the cemetery adjoining the Codorus Church. His daughter, Mary, widow of Elder Jacob E. Myers, is still living in Hanover. Three sons, David, Jacob and Charles are deceased.
This is the same David Y. Brillhart pictured on page 192 under Peter Brillhart Branch. This family is discussed on pages 192-194.
This article says David Y. made his home of the ancestral lands warrented by Peter which for five generations had been in the Brillhart family. Land Records of York County, PA show Peter and Mary Brilhart deeded land in Shrewsbury Twp. to Jacob Brillhart, deed dated 18 Apr 1797 and recorded 20 Apr 1797, Book 2M, pg 372.
Additionally, Abstract of York County Wills from 1749-1820 (Case Western Reserve Library) Brillhart, Jacob D. Will dated 7 Feb 1811 Proved 16 May 1811 Wife--Margaret Brillhart; Children--Peter, David, Elizabeth, and Samuel
PHBA page 192 lists the children of Jacob Brillhart married to Magaret Myers as David, Samuel, Peter, and Elizabeth which would seem to be proven by the above will abstract.
PHBA page 192 says David Brillhart, son of Jacob Brillhart was born in 1786 and was married to Magdalena Feigley. Two children: Jacob and Leah.
1850 PA Census, York Co., Springfield Twp., family 30/30 shows Brilhard, David, 52, value of real estate $5,000, wife Lauah (Lanah?), 54, with children Jacob 26, and Leah 22.
Thus we have fairly conclusive proof of the lineage from Peter to Jacob to
David to Jacob to David Y.
NOW FOR CORRECTIONS -
Page 192 says Jacob Brillhart, son of Peter and Mary, husband of Margaret Myers died in 1788. However, the abstract of the will given above says Jacob's will was dated 7 Feb 1811 and proved 16 May 1811 making his death someplace between those dates not 1788.
Pg 192, David is given a birthdate of 1786, but 1850 census records would make in about 1798.
Also pge 192, David's date death is given as 1824, but the 1850 census would
indicate he was still alive and well in 1850, being 52.
I find it interesting that on page 192 PHBA gives information on David Brillhart, son of Jacob, married to Magdalena Feigley with two children Jacob and Leah. He says Jacob married Rebecca Yost and talks about their son David Y. Brillhart on page 193. He also presents information on the daughter Leah and her children.
THEN ON PAGE 194 David Brillhart is listed again as son of Jacob married to Magdaline Feigley and it says, "Of this union little has been left on records to show their life's work." This is the same family he just spent two pages discussing. This has been part of my frustration with the Brillhart book over the years. I think the same people are discussed in more than one place with a little different information presented and without birth and death dates so it is impossible to know if this is really the same person.
[26904] The 1850 federal census taken 7 Sept in Jefferson, William Co., OH shows the family of George Dorshimer (age 39, farmer) to include Catharine (41, wife), Henry (18, farming), Sarah (20), Jacob (11) and George (unclear) - the parents and the two eldest children were b. in PA. The 1870 census 29 June of Jefferson shows George (59, farmer), Catherine (61, keeping house), George W. (20, farm laborer), Sarah (39, "at home"), Martha Judy (17, domestic servant) and Henry Myers (20, farm laborer).
