[36665] The Muscatine Journal and News-Tribune, 28 September 1959, p. 6: Columbus Junction Dr. Edgar W. McWilliams, 70, took his life by hanging at his home here at about 5 p.m. Sunday. Dr. McWilliams had been in failing health, after suffering a severe heart attack this summer. Raymond McCulley of Wapello, Louisa county coroner, said the death was suicide. Dr. McWilliams was born at Columbus Junction, Feb. 1, 1889, the son of Chester A. and Catherine Barr McWilliams. He had been a resident of Columbus Junction for all but a few years of his life. Dr. McWilliams had been active in many civic affairs, and was a former mayor of this community. He was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian church, serving as an elder and trustee. Dr. McWilliams was active in the Masons, and had served for 24 years as Worthy Patron for the Emma Beckman chapter of the O.E.S. Dr. McWilliams was married in July, 1918, to Cora Davis. Survivors include his wife; one son, Dr. Tom McWilliams of Bayard; two brothers, Charles of Hartford, Conn., and Verne of Bloomington, la.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.
