[5436] See "Medieval English Ancestors of Certain Americans," Carl Boyer III (Santa Clarita, CA, 2001), p. 89. Maurice ("of Windsor") was Lord of Lanstephen, Wales, and Steward of St. David's (and brother of David Fitz Gerald, Bishop of St. David's). He landed in Wexford, 1 Sept 1176. He m. Alice de Montgomery, daughter of Arnulf de Montgomery (fourth son of Roger de Montgomery, who led the center of the Norman line at the Battle of Hastings). They also had Walter White, whose line is shown in the unverified web site (2003) at http://cappyzeb.freeyellow.com/ancestors/pages/white/Gladys.html. http://www.irelandseye.com/irish/traditional/names/family/fzgerald.shtm offers: "The FitzGeralds are one of the two greatest families that came to Ireland with the Anglo-Norman invasion in the 12th century. The name means simply 'son of Gerald' and may have its origins in Italy, with the medieval Gherardini family of Florence. They crossed Europe to settle in Wales and then came to Ireland in the 12th century." http://fitzmaurice.info/ances.html states "In A.D. 1168, Dermot MacMorrogh, King of Leinster, driven from his territory by Roderick O'Conor, High King if Ireland, sought assistance from the Norman-Welsh and succeeded in enlisting in his cause Richard de Clare, Earl of Pembroke (called Strongbow). Having reached St. David's, on his way back to Ireland, Dermot was hospitably received by David fitzGerald (son of Gerald of Windsor), Bishop of the diocese. According to Burke's Peerage, the Bishop persuaded his brother, Maurice fitzGerald, and his half-brother, Robert fitzStephen to assist MacMorrough with their forces."
