[4759] James succeeded his cousin Thomas as Earl of Moray. James was hostage for the king, 1424-27. James is only son of Alexander and Mauld (who in addition had two daughters). http://www.stirnet.com/HTML/genie/british/dd/dunbar02.htm states: "BP1999 (Dunbar of Mochrum) reports that James was brother rather than cousin of the 3rd Earl." http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/g/a/r/J-H-Garner/FILE/0179page.html offers (not verified): "James Dunbar, Earl of Moray, b. circa 1399 Scotland; m. Isabel Innes, daughter of Sir Walter Innes Lord Innes and Euphemia Fraser; m. Catherine Gordon, daughter of Alexander Seton-Gordon Earl of Huntly and Elizabeth Crichton." A file in Ancestry.com in 2012 states James m. Janet Seton (b. 1401) and had Janet Dunbar, shown here as daughter - further research is needed. [2448] See Jirí Louda and Michael MacLagan, "Lines of Succession: Heraldry of the Royal Families of Europe, 2nd edition" (London, U.K.: Little, Brown and Company, 1999), table 64. http://www.guide2womenleaders.com/womeninpower/Womeninpower1150.htm offers: "First took over the government when her husband went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem. 1180 her father died and her half-brother Philippe became king. He confiscated the dower lands of his mother Adele (also Marie's sister-in-law) and then married Isabelle of Hainault, who had been previously betrothed to her eldest son. This prompted her to join a party of disgruntled nobles - including Queen Adele and the archbishop of Reims - in plotting against Philippe. Eventually, relations between her and her royal brother improved. Her husband returned from the Holy Land, but died almost immediately. Now a widow with four young children, she considered marrying Philip of Flanders, but the engagement was broken off suddenly for unknown reasons. After her husbands death, she acted as regent until her son, Henri II, came of age. However, he left to go on Crusade, and she once again served as regent in his absence until his death 1197 she retired to the nunnery of Fontaines-les-Nones near Meaux, and died there the following year. She was a patron of literature and maintained her own library. She was daughter of King Louis VII of France and Duchess Éleonore d'Aquitanie, her sister Alix was regent of Blois from 1191."
