[2958] Solomon is first recorded in Duxbury, Mass. in 1637 and in May, 1638 was promised lands on Duxburrow side. This was probably the usual recompense to a servant; since normal service was 7 years, we surmise that Solomon probably arrived in Plymouth ca. 1631. In Feb. 1639 he received a grant of 25 acres. In 1645 he received a share of land in what later became Bridgewater to which he moved soon after 1649. He died in Bridgewater by 1 May 1671 when his son, Solomon, confirmed that his deceased father, Solomon Leonard, had given land to "my brother John Leonard." "New England Marriages Prior to 1700," by Torrey, gives his marriage to Sarah Chandler as ca. 1640 at Duxbury, Plymouth Co., Mass. A correspondent states "I have that Solomon's father's name was Samuel" but does not have a source. Solomon also had Samuel, John, Jacob, Mary and Isaac per Savage, Gen. Dict., Vol. 3, p. 80. Philip R. Leonard (RR 1 - Box 213, Penobscot, ME 14476) stated in June, 1997 via Internet [pleonard@media2.hypernet.com] that a Malcolm White had provided his family with a genealogy which give Solomon Leonard as born in Monmouthshire and a dissenter who went to Leyden, The Netherlands early in his life and who came to America in 1629-30, settling near Blue Fish Rock, Duxbury, MA. He states Solomon moved with wife Mary to West Bridgewater in 1656 He reports that "History Highlight: Bridgewater, MA", p. 262, states the ancestors of Benjamin F. Ellis came to Bridgewater "...as share cropper tenants of the Leonards, one of the original Proprietors." "Mayflower Families through Five Generations" (Plymouth, MA: General Society of Mayflower Descendants - Vol. II" (Plymouth, MA: General Society of Mayflower Descendants, 1978), pp. 10, states his surname may be Lenner or Leonardson.
