His tombstone in the Jeromesville Methodist Churchyard cemetery gives his age at death as 70 years, 2 months and 11 days. George also married (2) 26 Dec 1837 Matilda Jones (and had Cordelia, b. 1846, Arminda, b. 1848, and Thomas, b. 1850). George also married (3) 22 May 1851 Elizabeth Brinkerhoff and had William H., b. 1851, and Mary J., b. 1853. Elizabeth was his wife when the deed for the farm was conveyed by them to their son-in-law, Joseph Heichel (recorded 07 Nov 1855), and at the 1860 census George reports he is age 56 and Elizabeth reports she is age 52; children at home are Cordelia (14), Armanda (12) and Thomas (10) - also living with them is Catherine Brinkerhoff, probably Elizabeth's mother, who was living in 1850 with Daniel and Sarah Brinkerhoff in Wayne Twp. (Daniel was 50 in 1850, and likely is Catherine's son). George and Matilda married 25 Dec 1837. George and Elizabeth married 22 May 1851. Elizabeth's will, 23 Feb 1880, names her cousin John Brinkerhoff and wife Mary, and her brother George Brinkerhoff and wife Elizabeth. The 1850 census lists in George's family a 9 year old male named William H. and a 7 year old female named Mary J.; Matilda's age in 1850 is given as 37, Cordelia was 5 and Arminda was 2. According to the "History of Ashland Co." George came from Maryland to Mohican Twp. in October, 1824 and opened a clothing store in Jeromesville, Ohio.

Received via email from Myrna Clark (myrna.clark@worldnet.att.net) 3 June, 2002:
I don't have the information at my finger tips on proof of Geo. Washington Waters Basford's parents but I can lead you to it. There are several documents of interest in Frederick County, Maryland. One document is an indenture, or bond, where his Mother indentured him to a man to learn the tailoring business. She gave his full name and birth date which lines up with our records. She may have made him a year younger or older than he was, wonder if this was to keep him indentured a bit longer, or less. We have wondered if his Father had died and the Mother couldn't support her younger children. Cassandra Basford indentured out two of her sons in the same document.
The other document of interest is a list of supplies that George Basford ordered the year before he went to Ohio. He went with a full wagon load. Probably more than one. Maybe at that time he was planning on setting up his mercantile store.
Through the census and other records we find that George Basford ran a mercantile store (where he would use his tailoring knowledge) and we also find him being owed some money in an estate settlement for making shoes for someone. (This was before George Jr. was old enough to be a shoemaker). In his latter years he is a basket maker. All sewing and weaving skills. He also owned a mill at Jeromesville and bought so much real estate. At one time on the census his worth was much greater than all others around him and I feel that he was the Realtor and land investor of his day. It is so unfortunate that no one wrote up a biographical sketch for him in the history of Ashland County. He was such an early settler and contributed so much to the community for a period close to 50 years.
Sorry about not having the documents now but I know that you can find them through Frederick County. What departments, I don't know. Maybe inquire at the Genealogical Society first. I was told about the documents from someone who had visited there. And, there is still a Basford Road!

A message board on RootsWeb includes this: "George Washington Basford B. MD 22 Dec. 1801 (Source: Frederick Co., MD - Indentures Orphans Ct. Proceedings HS3 March 1, 1919 MD State Arch.). He was indentured by the court to learn the art of tailoring until age 21y. He died in Ashland Co., OH 3 Mar 1871 at age 70 y 2m 11d. He mar. Ann Ridgely in Frederick by License 16 Jul 1822." And Alta Siegert (altajnet@webtv.net) offered via email in June, 2002:
"In brief, my line is through John Waters Basford 20 Nov 1798-22 Mar 1857 of Frederick Co., Md. He was the son of Thomas Basford who married Cassandra Waters 2 Apr 1784 in Prince George Co., Md. Their children were Adamson Waters Basford , Alfred Basford,, John Waters Basford, Millie Basford, Eleanor Basford Cordelia Basford and George Washington Waters Basford. I have data on these families and can trace them back.
"Now, where does your George W. belong? I do not believe we have definitive documentation. There are two indentures in Frederick Co. of importance. I have a George Washington Basford B. Md. 22 Dec. 1801 (Source: Frederick Co., Md. Indentures Orphans Ct. Proceedings HS3 March 1, 1819 Md State Arch.). 'George Basford, orphan, was indentured by the court to learn the art of tailoring to Christian Tabler until age 21y. He was 17 years on Dec. 22 last'. This would make him born 22 Dec 1801. Your George W. was a tailor when he first went to Ashland Co with the Ridgely family and died in Ashland Co. Ohio 3 Mar 1871 at age 70 y 2m 11d. He mar. Ann Ridgely in Frederick by Liscense 16 Jul 1822. However, if the age at death is correct in Ashland Co., he would have been born 23 Dec 1800. Is this one and the same man? I am not too concerned that the day is one day off, but the one year difference in the year is a concern. The Frederick date would be closer to the event. By 1871, age at death could have been as good as someones memory. I have never found a recorded birth for him.
"Another Indenture RB1 on 10 Mar 1815 in Frederick Co.. (At this time Cassandra Basford, wife of Thomas was making arrangments for all of her children.) reads 'John Waters Bassford and George Washington Waters Bassford, the former 16 years of age on 20 Nov last bound to Mathew Brown clothe manufacturer until both reach 21 years of age. John W. Bassford to be taught spinning and weaving and Georg W. Bassford to learn fulling and dyeing. In lieu of a suit of clothes Mathew Brown agrees to allow the mother of the orphans $8.00 a month and the mother shall find their clothes." Signed Mathew Brown and Cassandra Bassford, her mark.. The witnesses: John H Simmons and Davis Richardson. I never found any additional records for this George Washington Waters Bassford. The father Thomas had died by this time. It is believed in the War of 1812.' No age is given for the younger George W. This could also be your George W. or both indentures could be the same George W. Basford. Both Mathew Brown and Christian Tabler were in southern Frederick Co. where the Basford's lived.
"There is a will for George W. written 8 Aug 1870 with a codicil added 5 Feb 1871. My notes say he did not name his children by first wife.
"I also wanted to mention some names passed down through the years in my family that also occur in your families: Marion, Albertus (Albert), George, Cordellia, Cornelia, Sylvester and of course, Thomas and John. Popular names of the times or clues??"
