[1711] Edward ran the ferry for 25 years after his father died, and was succeeded as ferryman by William Pearce, his brother-in-law. He had three sisters and was apparently the only son of Arthur to reach adulthood. He fished on the Isle of Shoals before taking over the ferry.

He succeeded to the title of 2nd Earl of Westmorland [E., 1397] on 21 October 1425. He was invested as a Knight on 19 March 1426 by the infant King Henry VI. He held the office of Commissioner to keep the peace with Scotland on 26 May 1426. He held the office of Commissioner to keep the peace with Scotland on 15 December 1430. He held the office of Commissioner of array in the North on 6 August 1436. He held the office of Captain in the Marches towards Scotland on 6 August 1436. On 26 August 1443 a settlement was reached in the long running family feud over his estaes with his grandfather's second wife, Joan de Beaufort, Richard, Earl of Salisbury and other relatives of the half-blood.
