Frances M.: b. 28 Jun 1807, d. 22 Jul 1808. 12. Nancy: (No record, except listed as an heir in her fathers will). Details of Wm H., Sr's early life are unknown before his service as a Private in the Georgia Militia during the Revolutionary War. His application for pension filed on 29 May 1833 in Jefferson County, Territory of Florida, states that "he is a native of the City of Savannah in the State of Georgia and was born on the second day of August 1761". He further stated that he "was enrolled in the Militia in the month of September in the year 1777"...and "was altogether in Service in Georgia and South Carolina about four years...with occasional short intermissions". NOTE: The Judge of Superior Court, Middle District of Florida, opined a credit for 2 years of Service, issuing Certificate 22474 on 9 November, 1833 at the rate of $80 per annum. Family lore has Wm H., Sr as a Baptist minister attending the First Baptist Church in Savannah, plus Pioneers of Wiregrass, GA shows him as one of the incorporators of the church on 10 December 1801, and as Sheriff of Chatham County, 1799-1801. Next, we find Wm H., Sr in Laurens County as Justice of Inferior Court 1809-1812, plus recorded as one of four Commissioners charged to "lay out and establish new town to be called Dublin in said county...located on the Oconee River at the place formerly called 'the Sand-bar'. Notice dated April 4, 1811." The National Archives record of his oldest son Thomas's service in the War of 1812, indicates the family was still there in 1815 whereas on 8 March 1815 he is "...allowed mileage from residence (Dublin) to rendezvouz." Between 1820 and 1823, the Mathers 'can' removed from Pulaski County (cut from Laurens in 1808) to Duval County in the Territory of Florida. It is noted from the birth/marriage and date/place records of his children that the Mathers families were close-knit, seeming to relocate as an entire group, as many other frontier families were prone to do for the added 'safety in numbers' in the presence of hostile Indians and unscrupulous migrants. In 1823, records show Wm H., Sr was a Justice of the Peace; served in the Superior Court at Jacksonville during the December Term; and living on the St Mary's River at 'Roses Bluff'. His wife Margarett Shadd is recorded as dying 2 October 1823, so its logical to assume that she is buried in the Roses Bluff area. It appears that one or more of his sons went on to Jefferson County, Florida before 1825 (Augustus H., son of Wm H. Jr being born there in 1825); and Wm H. Sr went with them, or followed shortly afterwards. By 1827 he is shown in Jefferson County as a founding member of Ebenezer Baptist Church just south of Monticello, and remarried to Sarah MILLER on 3 September 1828. He and his sons would continue to be involved in local politics, he serving as Justice of the Peace, Solomon E. as Sheriff, and Wm H. Jr as Clerk of Courts. By the mid-1830's, oldest son Thomas had completed the Mathers clan removal from Georgia to Middle Florida, settling in Wakulla Co.. The first to die was Wm H. Sr in 1835, followed by his four sons Wm H. Jr in 1842, John G. in 1850, Solomon E. in 1858, and Thomas in 1866. Though Wm H. Sr did not live to vote in Florida's Statehood Election in 1845, three sons and three g'sons did. Wm H. Sr (Private, Revolutionary War) and son Thomas (Sergeant, War of 1812) are purported to be buried in unmarked graves in an obscure 'Mathers burial ground' off the Waukeenah Road, south of Monticello. Descendants have since scattered far and wide, some as far as TX/OK and others to East Central FL, thus ending the Mathers dynasty of Wiregrass Georgia and Suwanee-Land Florida. [Sources: Wm H. Mathers, Sr is as follows: "Thomas Mathers, his mark (Christ Church Parish). Exors to sell tract of land, containing 200 acres, at Ogechee,to pay debts. Wife: Ana, use of town lot and farm during her life; land to sons: William and John, after death of my wife. Exors: wife, and Richard Fox. Wit: J. J. Zubly, David Brydie,William Gibbons. The 1790 text digest of Chatham Co., GA lists Wm. H. Mathers. A Wm. Mathers is a grantee in the Chatham Co., GA Deed Books of 1789-1791. The 1820 federal census in GA lists William H. Mathers in Pulaski Co.
