Buffington, 77, of Gratz, died at her home this morning at 3 o clock. She had been failing recently and her death was due to complications. A native of Northumberland County she was born March 29, 1889, a daughter of the late James and Mary Rothermel Geist. She was a member of Simeon's United Church of Christ, Gratz. Mrs. Buffington's husband, Harry, preceded her in death 17 years ago. She is survived by one brother, Edwin Geist, Gratz and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday aiternoon at 2 o'clock from the Marlin S. Reed funeral home, Pillow. Her pas tor, James G. Reed, Elizabethville, will officiate. Interment will be made in the Gratz Union Cemetery."

[51511] The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine], 11 March 2016": "Gretna, Va. - Basil Adam Gross, age 100 of Gretna, Va., died Thursday, March 10, 2016, at Gretna Health and Rehab Center. Born July 2, 1915, in Orland, he was a son of the late Frank Gross and Nancy Gray Gross. He married his wife of over 61 years, Leah Closson Gross, on Oct. 14, 1936, who preceded him in death on Dec. 23, 1997. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by two sisters, one brother and one granddaughter, Diana Gross. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. Mr. Gross lived in Orland for over 60 years where he was an active member of the Masons and Eastern Star. He was also an active member in the Boy Scouts and was instrumental in getting a new local elementary school built. During World War II, he served in the Army as a Ranger in the European Theater. He served in Italy, France and Germany and earned two Bronze Star Medals for his service during the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he returned to Maine, where he worked at the St. Regis Paper Mill until he retired in 1977 and moved to Gretna. He is survived by one son, Dr. Alton F. Gross and wife, Vicky of Danville, Va.; one daughter, Nancy Upton of Java, Va.; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren."

Hanscom Sr. and Luetta Bridges Hanscom. She graduated from Sedgwick High School and Castine Normal School. She received her bachelors degree from Gorham State Teachers College and her masters degree from Boston University. She began her long teaching career at Sedgwick Grammar School before moving onto schools in York, South Portland and Gorham. She taught for many years and retired from the Winnbrook School in Belmont, Mass. After retiring, she married Merle Rainey and lived in Fort Kent until his death. She then moved to Lamoine to be with her sister. Katherine is survived by her sister Evelyn Linscott; nieces Diane Hanscom, Elaine Brissette and husband Craig; nephews Kerry Hanscom and wife, Faren, Michael Hanscom and wife Glenda, Jeffrey Linscott and wife, Pamela, and Kent Hanscom. She also leaves behind many great-nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law Mary Fowle and husband, Ron, and Marilyn Hanscom. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, Merle, brothers Orrin Hanscom and Earl Hanscom, nephew Mark Linscott and brother-in-law Dick Linscott."
