[5227] Prince (later king) Edward I transferred "the county of Ulster" about 1255 to Walter, Lord of Connaught. This was the second "creation" of this earldom, originally bestowed on Hugh de Lacey in 1205 but claimed by the crown on Hugh's death in 1226. Ulster is the northern part of Ireland, the name from the Gaelic Uladh and the Norse ending "ster". Walter married: (1) Maud, daughter of Hugh de Lacey, Earl of Ulster, and (2) Avelina FitzJohn (who died about 05-20-1274). His mother (and wife of his father) is from "Ancestral Roots..." (Balt., 1992) 177B-8.

[1724] Mathias engaged in the logging business with his brother, Samuel; they died within a week of each other. He resided at Greenland, NH. The 1902 Haines genealogy states (p. 26) "after marrying...he settled near the old homestead. He, with Leonard Weeks, was appointed in his father's will to see that his brother executed all the provisions of the will." He was a juryman in 1683.

[3449] "The extent of Otto the Great's dominions compelled him to delegate much of his authority in Saxony, and in 960 he gave to a trusted relative, Hermann Billung, certain duties and privileges on the eastern frontier and from time to time appointed him as his representative in Saxony. Hermann gradually extended his authority, and when he died in 973 was followed by his son Bernhard I, who was undoubtedly duke of Saxony in 986." {-Encycl.Brit.,`56,20:33} Hermann's wife was Hildegarde of Westerbourg.
