NOTE: Most researchers do NOT believe that the Mary shown here is his daughter!

Ninian Beall "came as an indentured Cromwellian Prisoner, served thirty-five years, lived to be 92, was six feet, 7 inches tall.... His thrift and perseverance made him an outstanding character of his day. He lived at `Fife Large', near what is now Georgetown, D.C." Georgetown is named for his youngest son, George. "The Beall family were people who stood pioneer life with fine physique...." - "Register of Maryland's Heraldic Families," Alice Norris Parran (Balt.: H.G.Roebuck & Son), p. 59. Ninian was Burgess, 1684; gave land for Presbyterian Church and presented it a silver Communion Service. Mary is not on the list of his known children! Largo, his birthplace, is on a lovely bay along the Firth of Forth NE of Edinburgh, Scotland. The surname Beal(l) or Bell is said to derive from ancient Druid priests known as "Na Belich" or the priests of Baal. There were 18 Beal, Beale and Bell immigrants to Maryland before 1700, and various Ninians, mostly from Scotland.

Ninian was a devout Presbyterian and helped begin the congregation in Calvert County, MD - he sent to Scotland for a pastor and in 1685 the Rev. Nathaniel Taylor and his congregation arrived (about 25 families, believed to include Mary and Sarah Beall/Bell). They were given land in present-day Prince George's County. Sarah m. into the Magruder family, which was close to Ninian. The Presbyterian settlement is now New Scotland, MD.

And internet correspondent reported (4/99) that his family history notes that Ninian Bell became Ninian Beall after he was captured by the English at the battle of Dunbar (1650).

Ninian Beall was original owner of much of present-day Washington, D.C. and a member of the Maryland Assembly. His heirs sold part of his estae but son George held on to a large piece along the Potomac River. By 1740 merchants and farmers were shipping tobacco from a wharf in a locale called Saw Pit Landing, which had been purchased from George Beall. In 1746 the colonial government of Maryland set up an inspection station in George Gordon's warehouse where Wisconsin Avenue and M Street intersect today. A sixty-acre town was laid out along the Potomac in the warehouse vicinity in 1751, at first called the Town of George and later Georgetown.

A Ninian Beall, around 1790, sold 330 acres of his vast holdings in southeast Washington to William Benning, who built a bridge across the Anacostia River and a house which survived well into the 20th century. After Benning died, his nephew Anthony purchased the farm, and in turn sold it in 1833 to Levi Sheriff, a Maryland merchant. Over the next decade Sheriff amassed 542 aces and owned 19 slaves who worked the land. Sheriff Road in southeast Washington and Prince Georges County, Maryland is named for him.

[22480] Charles was killed when struck by lightening. He and Emma may have also had a son, Clinton. The Blacks purchased the Colby farm in the big blueberry field south of the Grange Hall near Mariaville, ME - this farm was built in the mid-1850s - they also purchased the Hastings or Merrill place. This information is from historian Mark A. Honey of Ellsworth, ME, 2000.

Peabody Family Home Page (7/98) = http://www.pbdy.com/ - http://www.pbdy.com/begin2.html - starting at this page count to line 12 and this should read as follows complete: There is no account of the arrival of the "Planter" or of the homes found by her passengers. But in the year following Francis was definitely located at Ipswich, in Essex county, Massachusetts, and with tokens of having been there some months. The records of Ipswich are very imperfect, and part of the earlliest pages give evidence of being copies of older records, but seem to be trustworthy as to dates. The entry which first shows our man describes the lands of Samuel Hall: "Eight acres of planting gournd, by an act of the Towne as in the old book Anno 1636, lying near the highway going to Labour in vaine meadowe, butting to y/e East upon y/e planting ground of John Seaborn and on y/e North y/e planting ground of Francis Pebody" There should be found a record of the grant of this "Planting ground" to Pebody, and a home lot would have been granted him if he had a family; but the records show no such items. Nor do we find mention of the man in the fragmentary notes of town business till years have passed away and he is residing in an adjoining town. Nor do the annals of neighboring towns help us discover his history until he is found in the year 1640 one of the inhabitants of Hampton, and recorded by the historian of that plantation as a proprietor. He recieved the honor of freemanship in the colony May 18, 1642, his name associated with Hampton men in the list. In 1645 he had a share in the common lands of Hampton and was also acting as a member of the committee who saw to the finishing of the meetinghouse. His residence was near that of Isaac Perkins, and that of William Cole; and the wife of the last-named made her first entry into the court records, so far as we know, by the use of her reckless tongue against her near neighbors. An entry in the oldest book of records of Ipswich Court say, under date of Nov. 4, 1645, that "Eunice Cole is to sit in the stocks at Hampton and to make acknowledgement of her slanderous speeches concerning Susan Perkings & lidia pebodye and to pay the witness Isaac Perkings 7d and the feas of the court." Eunice Cole subsequent history, down to her witchcraft trials and imprisonment and her good husband's sorrows are elsewhere sufficiently enlarged on. It is enough for the present purpose to note the intimacy of the Pebody and Perkins famlilies; to hint at a possible relationship of the families; and to make careful note of the name of Francis Peabody's wife at the time, "Lydia," as the historian of Hampton gives it in his genealogies. He also adds a statement that the child of Francis, Lydia by name, was baptized at Hampton Aug. 30, 1640. But the same historian tells his readers in his introduction that he had access to records of the church only from a much later date; and none are extant to-day for any where near that time; so that it is a mystery where he obtained this entry. The court record, however, attest the name of the wife, and probability supports the historian's statement. Who Lydia was is absolutely unknown, though every shred of contempraneous records has been searched, it is believed, for information about it. But at some time after 1649, Francis, a widower, found a "Mary", who was the mother of at least half of the fourteen children of our pioneer. She was a legatee in the will of Reginald Foster of Ipswich, dated 30 April 1680, and specified as "my daughter Mary, wife of ffrancis Paybody." But we have another element of perplexity touching the marital history of this family. In his will we shall see that Francis Pabody calls Daniel Wood "son in law," and promises to do what he is "oblidged to do for him when come to age," saying that he will convey to him certain lands. Then we find the deed on record, wherein, "with good considerations and severall reasons moving me thereunto," he conveys to "my loving son Daniel Wood of Boxford" Jan. 20, 1695-6, 100 acres of land in Boxford, "for and in consideration of a parcell of land as I had & disposed of as y/e abovesaid Wood was hier to & for time spent in my service."
