[12955] His paternal grandmother was a Beaumont heiress, and Simon claimed the earldom of Leicester om her right and received it from King John. He became a figure of immense importance in the politics of the era - see "Who's Who in the Middle Ages," John Fines (NY: Barnes & Noble, 1995), pp. 163-167; "Simon de Montfort," M. W. Labarge (London: Spottiswoode, 1962). Simon was leader of the baronial revolt against King Henry III and was ruler of England for less than a year. See an extended discussion of this line in "The Paternal Ancestry of Homer Beers James" at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~pmcbride/james/f035.htm.
