[3523] He grew up at the Norman court and organized his own court on the Norman model. Norman influences spread throughout the kingdom in the first part of his reign. Perhaps overly pious, he declined to consummate his marriage. Childless, he named William, Duke of Normandy and his cousin, as his heir to the crown of England. Later in his reign English nobles assumed a more influential role through force. Edward's final wish was to preside at the consecration of the newly rebuilt Westminster Abbey Dec. 28, but his strength gave out and his role had to be taken by a deputy - Edward died in a few days. For further information, in April, 1999 a fine Web site is available at Cambridge University: http://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/MSS/Ee.3.59. See "1066: The Year of the Three Battles," Frank McLynn (London, England: Pimlico/Random House, 1999), Chapter 1. Also see http://uk.geocities.com/guildfordian2002/AngloSaxon/EdwardConfessor.htm.

[1814] Asahel and Joanna were the first settlers in Sandy Creek, later moving to the Fosterville section of South Bridgton, Maine, where they lived on what was later the Frank Johnson place. Asahel was killed by a horse's kick. They moved to the Bridgton area in 1772. He is reputed to be one of the first lumbermen to work in the upper reaches of the Union River.
