Alexander served in the War of 1812 (per "Penobscot Bicentennial, 1787-1987," by Frederick Mitchell, 1987, p. 50) {- also: George A. Wheeler, "History of Castine...," Bangor, 1875, p.362.} He served as a Private in the Continental Army for three years, enlisting 04 April 1778 at Pittston and mustered in Cambridge in Captain William Burton's Company and Col. Sherburn's Regiment - the regiment was comprised of three companies from Conn., two from Mass. and one from Rhode Island; during Alexander's final year of service he was transferred to Captain William Turner's Company in the 9th Regiment of the Mass. line, commanded by Col. Henry Jackson (D.A.R. # 549608). He is at Sedgwick at the 1790 census; the 1800 census states he moved from Kennebec County (where there is a large family of McCauslands); Alexander is at Penobscot at the 1810 and 1820 censuses, but not in Hancock Co. in the 1830 census - though there is an Alexander McCausland in Kennebec Co.; he shows again in 1840 in Penobscot as age 77 and a military pensioner included in the household of Alexander McCaslin; in 1850 Alexander and his wife are in the household of their son Job (Joab), a farmer. - "Genealogy of McCasland...," Thesta Kennedy Scogland (Baltimore: Gateway Press, 1984), pp. 423-4. Mark Honey states (Castine Patriot, 19 Aug 2000, p. 8): At the time of the 1800 census, "Alexander McCaslin was probably living on the old County Rd. north of Wight's Pond. This road is no longer traveled and should not be confused with the Groves Leach Rd. which the town of Penobscot has labeled the McCaslin Rd." "Soldiers, Sailors and Patriots of the Revolutionary War - Maine," Carleton E. and Sue G. Fisher (Louisville, KY: National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution", p. 514, lists "Alexander McCaslin, Mus, Cont, MA, r. Gardinerstown, b. Ireland 1759, d. Penobscot 1854, m. "Early Pleasant River Families of Washington County, Maine," Leonard F. Tibbetts and Darryl B. Lamson (Camden, ME: Picton Press), p. 348: "James McCausland came from northern Ireland to Falmouth, Maine, with a group of Scotch-Irish protestants in 1718; one of his grandsons was an early settler at Columbia Falls." [The next paragraph is:] "1. JOHN McCASLIN, b. 3 April 1757; d. winter of 1827-28, son of James (James) and Mary (Poor) McCaslin of Gardiner; Revolutionary War soldier at Pleasant River, serving 4 times between 24 June 1777 and 3 Sept 1779 as pvt in Capt John Hall's detachment; came bef 1778 to Columbia Falls . . . m. at Columbia 17 Nov 1779 SARAH KNOWLES, b. at Cape Elizabeth 22 June 1762; d. 1820+...." The list of children includes Alexander McCaslin, b. 2 Nov 1784, d. 1863. Apparently Alexander (b. 1763) is brother of John (b. 1757) rather than his son.
Mark Honey's "McCaslin Stream" in The Ellsworth American, 22 June 2006, I:4: "McCaslin Stream flows into Wight's Pond. It was named after Alexander McCaslin (1763-1853), a veteran of the American Revolution and the War of 1812. McCaslin married Abigail Gray, who was born circa 1769, the daughter of Reuben Gray and Abigail Black, who were pioneers of Penobscot and Brooksville. McCaslin served as a private during the Revolution, ending his service in the regiment commanded by Col. Henry Jackson. He was honorably discharged at West Point after three years of service. McCaslin moved with his family from Sedgwick to North Penobscot, on the old road to Blue Hill, circa 1799. The family, at that time, consisted of six children, with another five being born in the old homestead near the stream that bears his name. McCaslin ran a sawmill at this place, and operated a small farm. McCaslin enlisted again on June 17, 1814, and was discharged at Plattsburg, N.Y., on July 24, 1815. Alexander stood 5 feet 7 inches high, had blue eyes, and listed is occupation as a farmer. He took with him four of his sons, Adam, Andrew, James and Reuben, all of whom returned home after hostilities ceased. Alexander and Abigail McCaslin are buried in a small cemetery near the remains of the old homestead. The precise location of the cemetery is now lost."
