Find A Grave memorial 68566404 offers: "The fourth and most distinguished son of Alexander Campbell, of Cherryfield, was James, who settled in Harrington, and resided there until his death. He was first appointed by his father when the latter was major general, one of his aids, and by repeated promotions became brigadier general of the second brigade. Upon the death of his father in 1808, the vacancy on the bench of the Court of Common Pleas was filled by the son; a position which he held until 1811, when Governor Gerry commissioned him as one of the Judges for the third eastern circuit. This office he occupied until the reorganization of the courts in 1822. From 1813 until the separation he was a member of the Senate, the constitution of the parent commonwealth allowing what that of Maine pronouced incompatible, viz., that a judge could have a seat in the legislature. Judge Campbell died in 1826. He was a man of unblemished character and accredited piety. He was also popular, for when he, William King and William D. Williamson were candidtes for the senate on the same ticket, and from the same district, he uniformly received the greater number of votes. He was, however, rather good than great or active, for he never charged a jury when a judge, nor was chairman of a committee when in the General Court. In stature he was under the usual height; plethoric; a free partaker and lover of his meals; in complexion, dark; in purpose set, and of affronts received or supposed, not forgetful but forgiving." - Written by the late Hon. Cynthia Hinton, his greatgranddaughter, reports: "He had 4 children by his first wife, Adelina Leach, and then married Louisa Jane Beckwith Leighton who was a widow already with 4 children, and then, they together had another 5! Louisa Jane had a common nickname in the 1950's as Grammy Gray; she was totally blind in her aged years, but very sharp of mind. I believe she lived to be 91! I am named for her mother, Cynthia Louisa O'Brien Beckwith of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick."

[20600] John arrived with his parents aboard the ship Lyon at Nantasket 5 Feb 1631 at age 22. He was called "Quartermaster Perkins." He had nine children - see "Genealogy of John Perkins of Ipswich, Mass." by George A. Perkins (Salem, MA: Salem Press, 1889), p. 11. "The Ely Ancestry," George B. Vanderpoel, ed. (New York: The Calumet Press, 1902), p. 76: "John Perkins, Dr., born in England in 1614, came, with others of the same family, to Boston in New England in 1631, and with them removed to Ipswich in 1633. The next year he had a grant of land, as appears from the book of land grants of Ipswich. He married Elizabeth _____ about 1635, and entered upon the duties of life with a vigor which made him a desirable citizen of this new settlement. He opened the first public house in Ipswich, and was chosen as Quartermaster of the military organization of the settlement, a title which he ever afterwards retained. He was engaged in the coast fisheries, and used a part of what is Little Neck for curing his fish, as early as 1645. His family was quite large, consisting of eight sons and one daughter, and perhaps more." "Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts, Volume 2," edited by William Richard Cutter, p. 1040: "Quartermaster John Perkins, son of John and Judith Perkins, born England, 1614, died Ipswich, Massachusetts, December 14, 1686. It was he whom a band of Indians sought to kill while he was living 'in a little hut on his father's island,' but was forewarned of his danger by Robin, a friendly Indian. He opened the first publishing house in Ipswich, also engaged early in the fisheries, and by reason of his connection with the trainband gained the title of Quartermaster Perkins, by which he ever after was addressed.
