[21665] Known as "Ellis," he and his brother Randall were born in their parents' home on Vine St., Orrville, OH. He was named for David H. Piper, his uncle who was killed in military service in 1862. "Ellis" graduated in 1894 from the University of Nebraska Law School and opened a law practice with Bert Lyons in Wichita, Kansas. He moved his family to an area between Valles and Tampico in Mexico in 1903 in order to acquire agricultural land; the intent was to grow sugar cane from which to brew alcohol. His uncle Randall (then in his early 20s) and his grandfather Jonathan joined the venture - only Randall remained. In late 1904 David moved his family to Atlanta, GA where he was employed by L. W. Rogers who owned a grocery store chain. About 1907 they moved to Decatur, GA and lived in a house next to one of the Rogers grocery stores. He moved to historic Fitzgerald, GA where he had a store and where he met Cora; for the history of Fitzgerald, see http://www.fitzgeraldga.org/hist.html. The 1910 census of Fitzgerald lists David E. Peiper [sic] with wife Cora and son Ellis G.and daughter Mary. The 1920 census of Jacksonville, FL lists David E. (age 50) with wife Cora G (age 50) and children Ellis G. (16, b. in KS) and Mary R. (13, b. in GA). The 1930 census of Fort Lauderdale, FL shows David E. Piper (age 56, b. in OH), but does not list anyone else living in his household. Cora apparently returned to Cordelia, GA, as the 1930 census lists her there as head of household, with son Ellis G. (age 26, b. in KS) and daughter Mary R. (age 24, b. in GA).
