Penobscot Vital Records lists him as Haman Hahn de Echenagucia. Phil Perkins stated in 1995 that Herman is buried in Bangor, ME. Herman owned and ran a bakery business facing Water Street approximately where the parking lot is in the 1990s in front of Bah's Bake House (where Hooper's drug store stood in the 1880s). Herman and Priscilla r. on the east side of Green Street, in the second house north of Arthur Conner's home (at the corner of Water Street); their house was owned by Gary L. Brouillard in the 1990s. Apparently he was a seaman and a baker - The Ellsworth American in March, 1907 reported he was a member of the crew of the schooner J. F. Whitcomb which went ashore near the Cape of Virginia, seven miles northeast of the Assateague beach life-saving station (all crew members were saved).
He was living in the household of his grandparents, John Hanson and Lucy Wardwell, along with his greatgrandfather Eben Wardwell (age 82) on 10 June 1870 according to the federal census of Penobscot. [See "Letters Home from Sea: The Life and Letters of Solon J. Hanson, Down East Sailor," by Lucy Jane Webster and Meg Ann Noah (Brookline, NH: Hobblebush Books, 2006)] The Bangor, ME city directory in 1882 lists him as a baker, r. 3 Thaxter Lane. Herman H. Echenagucia is listed as a pilot [presumably a harbor pilot] residing at 20 Dawes in Dorchester in the 1915 and 1917 Boston, MA city directories. The 2 January 1920 census of Ward 11, Boston, MA lists him age 66, sailor on a steamship, father b. in San Sebastian, Spain, with wife Priscilla, age 68, parents b. in ME, and with grandson Arnold, age 19, b. in ME, employed by a shoe manufacturer.
The 1906 Penobscot, ME Town Register records him as a "sea capt" residing in South Ferry House, New York City.
