Thomas J. Basford deeded to Asa the SE quarter of the NE quarter of the SE quarter of Section 16, Township 45, Range 17, Morgan Co., MO for $200 - this parcel contains about 80 acres. The following was published in the local newspaper upon Asa's death: ASA WEBSTER - Versailles Statesman -- ASA WEBSTER, PIONEER MILLWRIGHT AND CITIZEN OF MORGAN COUNTY, MO -- In the passing last week of Asa Webster, south Morgan County loses one of it's oldest and most respected citizens. A man of sterling character, rugged honesty and kindliness toward his fellow man, together with the undaunted energy of the early day settlers of that section, Asa Webster came to Morgan County a young man, left his mark upon the sands of time, and is now gone to his reward eternal. There has always been something intriguing and a little mysterious to the average layman about the avocation of a millwright. Before the days of modern nethods in the building of mills, be they woolen mills, carding mills, flour and grist mills or saw mills, it has caused no little wonder how the old time millwright with his crude and imperfect tools performed the engineering feats of building almost perfect machines to perform the work they are called upon to do. So accurate in the cutting and matching of the wooden parts of their mechanical contrivances did the old millwrights become, that their machines ran and functioned to a manner almost as true as the modern steel cut and molded gears of today. Such a millwright was Asa Webster, it is said of him by the old timers of the section, that no level was more true than his eye and that no work of his was ever done in a haphazard or temporary manner. He built well and good and his name goes down in the historic annals of his adopted county where he lived and wrought for a half a century as a builder, a mechanical genius, whose handiwork, crude though it might have been, served to enlighten the burdens and add to the welfare of his community. Rest in Peace, Asa Webster, long time friends of the Statesman; your good works will not be overlooked by the Master Millwright.

OBIT - ASA WEBSTER -- Asa Webster, the son of John N. Webster and Sarah C. Webster, was born in Jeromesville, OH, February 24, 1842 and died at his home near Gravois Mills on September 5, 1933, being at the time of his death 91 years, 6 months and 9 days old. He was christened at an early age in the Lutheran religion. In early youth he spent most of his time as a farmer and millwright. He enlisted in Company B 102, in OH Voluntary Infantry, during the Civil War, in the month of August 1862, seeing active service until captured by Confederates in Athens, Alabama, on September 24, 1864, when he was confined in a Confederate Prison in Cahaba, Alabama until March 1865. He suffered untold privation and hunger during his incarceration. Upon release from prison, he was placed on board the steamer "Sultana" on April 25, 1865, to be sent home. This boat ride was to be the most dangerous of all his Army life, owing to the fact that the ship was destroyed by a boiler explosion causing the death of some 2000 of his comrades. He was forced to swim eight miles before he was suffered injuries which contributed to his last illness. Upon his return to OH he again began his duties as a millwright. On November 26, 1867, he was united in marriage with Arminda Basford, and in March 1870, they moved with his parents, brothers and sisters to Gravois Mills, again he entered the trade of farming and milling. Three children was born to this union, namely, Sarah C., Daniel Franklin and William. All of who preceded him in death. He is survived by one grandson, Herbert, and wife, one great grandson ?, two great granddaughters, Normal Jane and Mellis Beth, a host of nieces and nephews and friends. He was a devoted father and grandfather and was one who will be missed greatly in the community. Those attending the funeral from out of town were; Al Webster and sons, Forrest and Harry, Mary Webster, Clyde Webster, Earl Webster and family Grover Webster , all of Franklin, MO. Mrs. Will Fish of Fayette, MO, Mr and Mrs. Wm. Veulemans and daughter, Anna, and Mrs. John Voulemans of Tipton, MO. [Note by Author: Grover Webster was my father. - CF Webster 6/2002].

In his last letter written to the STATESMAN by John A. Hanny shortly before his demise, we reproduce the following extract:
"Through the kindness of my 91 year old-time friend, Asa Webster, of Gravois Mills, Prof. D. W. Eaton of Oak Grove, Virginia, and H. W. Washburn of Versailles, together with my own impressions and personal knowledge, I am able to give several chapters of interesting Morgan County history concerning early day saw mills, grist and flour mills located chiefly along the creeks. MILLS ALONG THE GRAVOIS, By John A. Hanny: "Josiah Walton built a grist mill just below where Hawes Brothers, many, many years later, 1870-71, put in a woolen factory, half mile west of Gravois Mills. Mr. Wenver and a man named Williams operated the factory for fifteen years, when the Hawes Brothers failed in business. They manufactured woolen goods and sold to merchants throughout Central MO. Uncle Joe Hawes being the traveling salesman, carrying several brands in a spring wagon, covering his route every few weeks. When Humes Brothers failed, Asa Webster, administrator of the estate of his parents, brought suit against them to foreclose a mortgage held by his father on the woolen mills property. The proceedings came before Circuit Judge Edwards in 1886, court being held in Martin's hotel, fire having destroyed, among other buildings, the old 1844 courthouse. W.W. Kavanaugh was the sheriff at that time. At the sale following, the property was knocked off to Asa Webster on a bid of $1,000. Afterward, when the estate left by their parents was divided among the heirs the woolen mills fell to Asa Webster. Adding a small saw mill to the property, he put his son Daniel in charge. While operating the carding machine Dan helped his father put in the dam that resulted in forming the Webster Lake, a beautiful body of deep, clear spring water. The property passed through several ownerships, including Dan Webster, Anderson Collins, Riege Williams, A.H. Norquist of KA City, who stocked the lake with game fish, and ran a popular summer resort. And now, Habart EcQuerter has lived in the old place with a fish hatchery at the spring and is attracting tourists from far and near."

At the request of the editor of the STATESMAN, Asa Webster, in his own hand writing furnished the following information relative to his coming to Morgan County. The following article is reproduced from the February 10, 1927 issue of the Statesman. Dear Mr. Baker - my father J.N. Webster, came here from OH and bought this place (right at the mill site) and J.N. Webster and my self moved here in the year 1870, making 57 years the first of April. I have done almost all kinds of work, farming, operating a saw mill and doing carpenter work, raising live stock and doing many other things. I don't know very much about the old factory Mill up by Collin's Lake, a mile here. I have only known it since a man by the name of Humes owned it long years ago but I think it was built the lower mill (the Voulemans mill) by the same man. It was built for grinding corn and later another was built for carding wool. Both were run by undershot wheels, water power. Some called them "breastwheels". When Humes got the mill he converted it into an overshot wheel power and put in a sawmill. With this old mill Thomas Humes sawed a great deal of lumber that went into the old woolen mill. Then the civil war came on and put a stop to the building until about 1870, 71 and 72 when they got it operation again. Then they made all kinds of woolen goods. They ran the factory for 15 to 20 years when they closed down and the property was sold at a Sheriff's Sale and I bought it and the court gave me possession of the property. Then my son Dan Webster moved on the place and ran it quite a while and fixed to grind corn and finally to make flour. Then he and I built the dam. Then I gave him a deed to all the property. After running the mill a while, he sold it to Andrew Collins. Later Andrew sold it to Dolph Collins and Dolph sold it to ?? Williams, present owner. I have given this information without the dates of transfer. These can be had from the abstract which I gave when we built the dam.

OBIT - ASA WEBSTER - in the Versailles Leader, Friday, September 8, 1933 -- ASA WEBSTER DIED TUESDAY, SEPT. 5 - WAS 91 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH - RESIDENT OF COUNTY FOR 65 YEARS -- Asa Webster, 91 years old, a resident of Morgan County for the past 65 years, a veteran of the civil war, in which he fought on the side of the Union, and one of the true pioneers of this section, passed away at the home of his grandson, Herbert Webster, at Gravois Mills, Tuesday, September 5th. A complication of diseases and his extreme age caused his death. Mr. Webster was born in Jeroman ville, OH, February 24, 1842, a son of Mr. and Mrs. John N. Webster. Sixty five years ago he came with his parents to Morgan county and since that time had made his home near Gravois Mills, where, with the exception of a few years, he was actively engaged in farming and in the milling business throughout his life. On November 21, 1867, he was united in marriage to Arminda Basford, who preceded him in death, April 26, 1926. Three children were born to them, Sadie, who died in infancy; and two sons, Dan and Willie, who passed on after growing to manhood. He is survived by one grandson, Herbert Webster, of Gravois Mills, one great grandson and two great grand daughters, children of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Webster. He also is survived by one brother in law, Tom Basford, and a large number of other relatives and friends. In the year 1870, Humes Bros. put in a woolen mill a short distance west of Gravois Mills and was operated by various people for about fifteen years. When the firm failed, Asa Webster, who was then administrator for the estate of his parents, brought suit to fore close a mortgage held by his father on the woolen mills property. At the sale following, he bid in the property for $1000. Later, when the estate was divided among the heirs, the mill was included in Asa's share. After the addition of a sawmill, he placed his son, Dan, in charge. It was during Mr. Webster's ownership of the mill that the Webster Lake, west of Gravois Mills, now commonly known as Collin's Lake, was built. Since that time the property has passed through several ownerships and is now owned by H. G. McQuerter. When the Lake of the Ozarks was formed, Uncle Asa was forced to vacate his Gravois bottom farm a short distance east of Gravois Mills, and moved to higher ground. He purchased the Page property near Gravois Mills and until his death lived there with his grand son, Herbert Webster and his family. With the passing of Uncle Asa, Morgan county loses one of it's most substantial and most admired citizens. Although he was 91 years old he had a memory to be proud of, and could talk entertainly for hours about the early days in Morgan county. He was well read and kept pace with rapidly moving events of our present day life through his daily and weekly papers. Most of all, his pleasant visits to The Leader office will be missed. The Leader extends sympathy to the following relatives of this good man. Funeral services were held at the home, Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Interment at Ivy Cem.

VERSAILLES LEADER - Friday, May 19, 1892 -- Mr. Daniel Webster and Miss Melissa Collins, both of Gravois Mills, were united in the bonds of holy wedlock on the 8th last, Reverend J. K. Sims officiating. The wedding, which occurred at the home of the groom's parents, was a quiet affair and a complete surprise to the friends of the contracting parties. And so it was intended. For as Dan declared, disinterested parties who had been giving out dates for the affair had to be rebuked. The groom is on industrious and clever young gentleman and is well known to most of our citizens. He is the son of Asa Webster of Gravois Mills, one of Morgan's well known and substantial citizens. The bride is an amiable young lady and will make a true and loving helpmate. The Leader wishes them much happiness.
