[20475] For this line, see "Medieval English Ancestors of Certain Americans," Carl Boyer III (Santa Clarita, CA, 2001), p. 13, which believes proof is lacking that Philip is son of Alan and Aline, and states that Philip m. (2) Ela Longespée (d. 9 Feb 1298, buried in Oseney Abbey, Oxforshire, who m. first Thomas de Newburgh, 6th Earl of Warwick). Also see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_Basset.
[17674] living - details excluded
John came from Co. Kent, England on Ship "Ann" and r. Scituate, MA (1639). He served as a Lieutenant in the colonial militia. {- "The Stoddard Family," F. R. Stoddard, Jr. (N.Y.: The Trow Press, 1912, p. 30)}. He was admitted a Freeman at Scituate in 1649 and was Deputy to the General Court in 1657, 1677 and 1678. He was Surveyor of Highways in 1763 and was Deacon of the Second Church of Scituate. Also served as Constable and on the Grand Jury. He had nineteen children, two of whom died in infancy, but his wife Mary was sole executrix of his will. A Prodigy correspondent states (2/91) that his father is John Bryant, Sr. His son, Lt. John Bryant, 3rd was b. 17 August 1644 and m. Abigail, dau. of D. Stephen, Sr. and wife Abigail Shaw. The first John Bryant (Sr.?) died 28 April 1638 in Taunton, MA, leaving no will or other means of identifying a child. John r. Scituate, MA and his will is dated 1684. See NEHGR 17:162-163; 48:46-53. Also see http://babbage.clarku.edu/~djoyce/gen/report/rr03/rr03_224.html in 2003.
One Sunday morning John entered the church meeting house late. After prayers, the Rev. William Witherle spoke to him before the assembled worshippers: "Neighbor Bryant, it is to your reproach that you have disturbed the worship by entering late, living as you do within a mile of this place, and especially so while here is Goody Barstow who has milked seven cows, made a cheese, and walked five miles to the house of God." (Pastor Witherle was John's father-in-law!)
- - - - -
Unverified information states that John's brother is Stephen Bryant, whose wife is Abigail Shaw. Stephen is purported to have arrived in America with his older brother Thomas and younger brother John. Parents of these brothers are purported to be John (b. 1578) and Grace Wayford (b. 1582). Grandparents are purported to be John Bryant (b. 1553) and Rose Church; John is purported to be son of Robert Bryant (b. 1532) and Eleanor Bendish.
For further information on this family, see "History of Scituate, Massachusetts," Samuel Deane (Boston: James Loring, 1831), pp. 227-228 and http://www.scituatehistoricalsociety.org/families/Bryant.htm
