It is curious that a Freeborn H. Gardner was with the Mormon forces at the Battle of Crooked River, 25 October 1838 - see http://www.farwesthistory.com/forces.htm which reports "Freeborn H. Gardner also joined Patten's company and went as far as 'Bragg's place,' While there, 'I heard D. Patten lecturing the troops; heard him direct his men how to shoot to bring their guns up on a rise to their object, and hold their breath, and fire; and generally they would make a deadly shoot [sic].' But Gardner decided to turn back and didn't participate in the raid on Bogart. Benjamin Bragg's place was located in the southeast quarter of the southwest quarter of section 11, township 55, range 29 [Correspondence & Orders, 133-134]." Crooked River is a tributary of the Missouri River in northwestern MO due west of central IL (see map at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~raymondfamily/BattleCrookedRiver.html). A Freeborn Gardner and a Simeon Gardner are on the list of those excommunicated by the Mormon Council 26 April 1839 (http://www.saintswithouthalos.com/m/390426.phtml).
Note that our Freeborn had a son, Freeborn, b. in 1841 in Brown Co., IL. Thelma Martin posted 11 July 2004 on ancestry com: "I found a Freeburn Gardner with a son named Freeburn born 1841 in Illinois in 1860 census for Dick Johnson Twp, Clay Co., Indiana; 1870 Freeburn and wife Jane Davis ( Daves) with daughter Cora B. 1 yr. in Brazile Twp, Clay Co , Indiana. Didn't find again until 1910 Freeborn with wife Mary (married 38 yrs which would be 1872) so divorced or Jane died between 1870 and 1872. son Harry aged 21 in 3rd Ward Traverse City, Grand Traverse Co., Michigan. Freeborn and Mary in same place in 1920. I can send copies of census pages to your email if you would like. He was also in Union Army, Company M, 4th Cavalry Regiment, Indiana 28 July 1862 to 29 June 1865." The 1860 census shows Freeborn H. Gardner, 'lumber manufacturer', with real estate valued at $1650 and 'personal estate' valued at $150, born in Ohio, with a female (occupation "house keeper", probably his wife) whose name is indistinct (perhaps "Serrice")(b. in KY), and Freeborn, Jr. (age 18, b. in IL, a carpenter), Elizabeth (age 16, b. in IL, a "domestic"), William (age 9, b. in IN), Artimesa S (female, age 6, b. in IN) and Melissa (age 2, b. in IN). Compton's Encyclopedia (via America Online, 1995):
JAMES I (born 1566, ruled 1603-25) was already King James VI of Scotland when
he came to the English throne as the first of the Stuart line (see Stuart).
He was the son of Mary, queen of Scotland, and of her second husband, the
feeble Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley. He became king of Scotland the year after
he was born when his mother was forced to abdicate. During his childhood a
succession of regents struggled to assert his authority.
He was a puppet of contending intriguers and faction leaders until 1582
when he was seized by Protestants and held captive for a year. Upon his
escape he began to pursue policies of his own.
As a boy the king was sickly and had a weakness of the legs. He became a
bold horseback rider, even though for many years he had to be tied into the
saddle. He was well educated, especially in theology, and, although the son
of a Catholic mother, remained through life a staunch Protestant.
When James succeeded to the English throne in 1603, on the death of Queen
Elizabeth I, he was nearly 37 and prided himself on what he called his
"kingcraft." In reality he so lacked political discretion that a French
statesman once characterized him as "the wisest fool in Christendom."
The English people were displeased by his vain attempt to bring about a
closer union of his two kingdoms of England and Scotland. He alienated both
the Puritans and the Catholics (see Puritans). Some of the Catholics engaged
in the Gunpowder Plot to blow up Parliament and the king and bring in a
Catholic ruler (see Fawkes). Only one of his acts pleased the Puritans--at
his instruction, scholars prepared a new translation of the Bible, called the
"King James Version." Published in 1611, it remains in common use today.
James I also quarreled with Parliament over taxation and political
matters. He believed in the "divine right of kings"; that is, that they
receive their powers from God, and are responsible to Him alone. Thus it was
not surprising that he took the position that Parliament owed all its powers
and privileges to the graciousness of the king; while Parliament claimed that
these powers and privileges were the "birthright and inheritance of the
subjects of England." James wished to ally with the Catholic country of Spain
and to marry his son Charles to a Spanish princess. Parliament wanted to
fight Spain at sea and thus aid the German Protestants in the Thirty Years'
War (see Thirty Years' War).
Not until James's plans for a Spanish alliance failed and he decided to
make war upon that country did he and Parliament agree. A year after the war
began, James I died, leaving his son Charles I the problems he himself had
been unable to solve.

James ruled Scotland as James VI (1567-1625) and England as James I, first
sovereign of the House of Stuart.
