[7435] Stephan arrived in America in 1726 with his mother, Anna Katharine Hoffman, and his brother, Johann Michael Brecht; they settled first in Schoharie, NY and then in North Heidelberg Twp., Berks Co., PA (where he was one of the organizers of the North Heidelberg Moravian Church). Stephan had three wives, and the name of the first (David's mother) is not known. Elizabeth, widow of Stephan Brecht, died in 1751 per cemetery records for God's Acre, Union Church of North Heidelberg, 6 miles north of Robesonia, PA. "Rhineland Emigrants," Don Yoder, Ed. (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1981), p. 4: "The widow of Johann Brecht of Schriesheim was permitted to go to Pennsylvania in 1726 with her two sons Stephan and Johann Brecht. ... Stephan Brecht, one of the emigrants of 1726, had children baptized in the Bern Reformed Church, Berks County (Elisabeth, 1738; Anna Maria, 1745)(Bern Church Records, 1738-1835, Hinke, Collection)." See "Historical Sketch of the Bright Family," Albert G. Green, in "Transactions of the Historical Society of Berks County," vol. 1 (1898-1904) and typescripts in several volumes on "The Bright Family of Pennsylvania" in the Heber Gossler Gearhart Collection at the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

John was recorded for a six acre grant at Plymouth, MA in 1636. {-"Ye Atte Wode Annals," Elijah Francis Atwood, June, 1928.} Our John was baptised at St. Martin's Church in London 24 Dec 1614 per Benjamin Shurtleff's MS in Wisc. Hist. Soc. Library, where his ancestry is also given. He died at Plymouth, Mass. (will probated 7 March 1676). John had come early to Mass., returned to England, and emigrated again on the Ship Hopewell in 1635. John was Governor Assistant of the colony in 1638. {Also see "The Mary Atwood Sampler," NEHGR (1990), 144:24-26.}
