"Ye Atte Wode Annals" state: "His brass related that he served Queen Elizabeth after the second year of her reign. His position was undoubtedly that of Assistant Sergeant of the Queen's Carriages, with his cousin, John Ownstead, as Sergeant." He m. Olive, dau. and heir of John Harman; most of their children are on the parish register of Gatton and Sanderstead. "When in the country, they resided at Court Farm and here one night when roads were specially bad and the Queen returning from one of her trips, she spent the night at Court Farm. The Greshams held the court itself but were Catholic, so Elizabeth preferred to stop with Nicholas." He was buried in St. Martin's Church May 14 re: parish registers, but his brass states his burial was May 12 in Sanderstead Church ("evidently a guess of his grandson, Harman, 2nd"). http://chrisman.org/pedigree/out31.htm (not verified) offers his children: Harman Atwood (1570-15 Dec 1653), Jon Atwood (ca 1570-), Oliver Atwood (1572-by 1586), Alice Atwood (Jan 1574-), Susan Atwood (1575-after 1622), Nicholas Atwood (1578-1602), Thomas Atwood (1579-after 1643), James Atwood (1580-1643), John Atwood (4 Feb 1582-by 27 Feb 1644), Derrick Atwood (4 Feb 1582-1583), Richard Atwood (1584-1603/1604) - and offers: "One of the earliest records now in the church in Sanderstead Village reads: 'Here lyeth Nycholas Wood, third son of John Atwood of Sanderstead Court, who served Queen Elizabeth sinsce the second year of her reign, and deceased the 14th of May, 1586, leaving behind him a Wife and children, seven sons, Harmon, Nicholas, James, John, Alice, Susan, Thomas, Richard.'
