William's family history is given in "A Family of the Bagaduce: The Ancestry and Genealogy of William Conner, Jr....," by Albert E. Myers (Harrisburg, PA, 1976). His middle name is Henry per plaque under his portrait in the Wilson Museum, Castine, Maine; this plaque notes that Capt. Conner sailed clipper ships to the West Indies and other ports, and later sailed to the Grand Banks.

He is not to be confused with person of the same name in coastal Waldo County, Maine. The ship William H. Conner, built in Searsport, was named for this other William H. Conner, who d. 13 Sept 1875 at age 57, resident of Belfast, ME, merchant and shipbuilder (m. Caroline R. Porter 22 Sept 1839, she d. 13 Sept 1875) - the ship was the largest and last full-rigged ship built at Searsport [launched in June, 1877, 210' long, 40' beam, 24' depth, 1496 tons].

A fine description of fishing on the Grand Banks under sail is given in Chapter 26 of "Coastal Maine: A Maritime History," Roger F. Duncan (New York: W.W.Norton, 1992). Also see "Maine Sea Fisheries: The Rise and Fall of a Native Industry, 1830-1890," by Wayne M. O'Leary (Boston: Northeastern University Press). By 1860 Castine was the wealthiest town in Maine, due to its fishing fleet.

"Some Castine Vessels," collected and prepared in typescript by Robert Applebee and in the library of the Searsport (ME) Maritime Museum, contains the registration information (10 May 1839) for the ship Patapsco, owned by Robert Perkins of Castine, which states that the ship was built in Castine in 1835 and had one deck and two masts, is 72-1/2 feet long and 18"4" wide, and has a depth of 8'2" - 96 and 88/95 tons - square stern, no galleries and a billet head, and that William Connor, Jr. [sic] is the present Master.

[394] [S12] dates per "Sea Captains of Penobscot," by Eben Bassett.

[1031] John m. Ann _____; her name is given as Hannah in "The Stoddard Family", which states (p. 25): "The date of the death of Mrs. Hannah Stodder is not found upon the Hingham records. Savage, in his Genealogical Dictionary, states that she died on October 8, 1675." Other sources give her name as Ann (perhaps a widow). John settled at Hingham about 1638, arriving with his wife (H)annah and four children. He "was one of the party known as rigid Puritans." "He was probably of London...." In 1638 he was granted a "planting lot" of four acres with the sea on its east boundary, and another three acres between the salt meadows and the town common. "John Stodder was probably well along in middle age when he landed. On May 18, 1642, he ws made a full freeman of the Colony, at which time according to Mr. Savage he lived at Hull. In very early days the franchise was limited to the more intelligent men of the community who were members of the church in good standing, and, these, by becoming freemen, were given a right to vote. John Stodder's house was at Hingham, where he served the town in many ways." In 1647 he received the 16th lot in the second division of the town. On 22 April 1640 he was appointed hog reeve. The LDS Church's unverified IGI files usually give his death date as 19 Dec 1661, his marriage date as 1629 or 1630 and his father as George Anthony Stodder. [See also "The Stoddards of Rushton Spencer: A Short Account of the Ancestors of Anthony Stoddard of Boston, Massachusetts, who emigrated there in about 1638", Jeanne Stoddard (London: Rushton Spencer-Stoddard Memorial Fund, 1979).] Children of John and Ann (except for son John) are from Bill Marshall via Internet (wtm@research.att.com), 113 N. Summit Av., Chatham, NJ 07928, 3/97 - and are not verified.

[1030] [S1] LDS Church's Ancestral File - not verified.
