Captain Manwarren Beal was born 12 August 1736 at York, ME. He moved eastward along the ME coast to Cape Elizabeth for about 10 years, then to Mt. Desert Island about 1768, to Bucks Harbour (now part of Machiasport, ME) in 1770 when he bought the property of John Manchester, and in 1774 to Beals Island, where he settled and remained for the rest of his life. He brought a considerable quantity of possessions and goods with him, and established a store on the island. He supplied the settlers of the region with goods which he and his sons brought in coastal vessels from Falmouth and Boston. He had a good relationship with the local Indians. His intelligence, education, personality, and commanding size all tended to make him a leader among the local settlers. In 1775, he engaged in correspondence with the patriots Committee of Safety, which entitles him to be considered a Revolutionary War Patriot.
Late in 1776, a British ship stopped at Beals Island and seized the family's winter food supply and other goods, but did not harm anyone (Manwarren was not home at the time), and the family managed to survive the winter.
Tales of his large size and great strength are often told interchangeably about him and his great-grandson, "Tall Barney" Beal (1836-1899). Manwarren was about 6'-7' tall, and weighed over 300 pounds in 1800. He had a wooden chair especially made to hold him. He also wrote some poetry. There is a considerable amount of other details accumulated concerning his personality and activities. He died suddenly on Beal's Island August 23, 1800, aged 64 years. On November 15, 1758 at Cape Elizabeth he had married Lydia Welch, who was born June 17, 1739 at Cape Elizabeth. She died about 1800 (soon after her husband), aged 61 or 62 years.
On March 3, 1801 an inventory was made of Manwarren's property. Total Real Estate consisted of his homestead which consisted of 75 acres with buildings valued at $1,056.00. The total estate including person items totaled $3,300.29.
