[13974] Reported by http://www.infodex.demon.co.uk/1292.html (May 1999): "By 1292, the succession to the Scottish throne had become a showdown between two principal claiments - Robert the Competitor and John Balliol. Edward 1 had ordered during 1291 that all claiments should appear before a special court to petition their claims. So on 3rd August 1291 all the claiments gathered at the court. Edward adjourned the proceedings until 2nd June 1292, and again until 14th October 1292. The two claiments were both descendants of David, Earl of Huntingdon, the brother of King William 1 the Lion whose line came to an end on the death of the Maid of Norway. David, the king's brother, had no male heirs, only daughters of whom Balliol was the grandson of the eldest daughter. Robert the Competitor was the son of the second eldest daughter. The other living descendant was John Hastings, Lord of Abergavenny, grandson of the third daughter. Balliol's claim was based on the fact that he was descended from the senior daughter. Robert the Competitor claimed he was the closest descendant of David and also by virtue of his nomination as heir to the throne by Alexander II when he had been childless. Robert had also gained the ancient right of holding the support of seven earls who had the power to elect a king. It is known that at the beginning of the court case, Edward 1 favoured Robert's claim, but, Anthony Bek, Bishop of Durham, very cunningly pointed out to Edward that the Bruce's possessed vast lands in England, and were he to become King of Scotland it might be possible for the Bruce's to cause Edward a great deal of trouble. Edward changed his mind and it became known that as he had redefined the laws governing succession in Enland to be by seniority of line, the auditors of the court decided that in this instance the Scottish succession should follow suit. Therefore the descendants of the eldest daughter of David, Earl of Huntingdon, should be the rightful judgement. Robert the Competitor was told of this on 6th November. The next day, (7th November), he delegated his claim to the throne of Scotland to his son, the Earl of Carrick and his heirs. This document is preserved in the British Museum. On the 9th November, the Earl resigned his earldom in favour of his eldest son and heir, Robert Bruce the future king now only eighteen years old. On 17th November 1292, at Berwick castle, King Edward's chief justice, Roger le Brabazon, read out the court's judgement - John Balliol was legal heir to the throne of Scotland. Fordun records that at this stage, the Earl of Gloucester, holding Robert the Bruce by the hand, in sight of all, spoke thus to the King: 'Recollect O King what kind of judgement thou hast given today and know that thou must be judged at the last'. At the Earl's bidding, Robert Bruce left and never paid homage to the new King John of Scotland. Three days after the announcement, John swore fealty for his kingdom. On 30th November 1292, he was crowned at Scone as King of Scotland. As King of Scotland, on 26th December 1292, King John once more paid homage to his lord superior King Edward I of England. He was now a totally subservient King, ensnared as a vassal by the documents the English had drawn up. The new king was soon labelled Toom Tabard. He was to all intent and purpose as meek as a new born lamb. King John had very little Scots blood in him. He was from Picardy and had vast lands in France. The only link he had with Scotland was his inheritence of Galloway and that his sister had married John Comyn of Badenoch, head of the 'Red Comyns' family. Edward I treated the new king of Scotland with absolute contempt. King John could not earn the respect of the Scots and his short reign came to an end in 1296." There is a good description of him as a person in "Robert Bruce and the Community of the Realm of Scotland" by G. Barrow (941.02 B278r).

[1422] http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~pmcbride/james/f023.htm#I1226X1 reports in 2003: "Robert (surnamed FitzParnel from his mother), 4th Earl of Leicester, succeeded his father in Messina in 1191, being invested by King Richard with the cincture of a sword. After which, while his master was detained in captivity by the emperor, the King of France having invaded Normandy, and taken divers places, this earl coming to Roan, excited the inhabitants to so vigorous a defense, that the French monarch was obliged to retreat. Furthermore, it is related of him, that making a pilgrimage into the Holy Land, he there unhorsed and slew the Soldan in a tournament, when returning into England, he died in 1204, and was buried at the abbey of Leicester. He had married Laureeta, daughter of William de Braose, Lord Braose, of Brember, but having no issue, the Earldom of Leicester became extinct, while his great inheritance devolved upon his two sisters as co-heirs."

[1941] Theodore I is son-in-law of Alexius III ("Angelus"), q.v. (ID810), and was succeeded by his son-in-law John III ("John Ducas Vatatzes") whose son Theodore II (1254-58) assumed the family name Lascaris. Theodore I "scarcely looked the part of a great leader. In body he was very small, moderately dark, with a long beard which was divided at the ends. His eyes differed one from the other, probably indicating that one of them did not focus properly. Looks notwithstanding, Theodore was a brave soldier. As the husband of Anna Angelina, Alexius III's daughter, his claim to the throne was better than that of anyone else available after the fall of Constantinople. He reigned 1206-1222. At his death, the throne went to his daughter by Anna, Irene Laskaris, and her husband John Doukas Vatatzes." - "Imperial Byzantine Portraits," by Constance Head. Cf. Jirí Louda and Michael MacLagan, "Lines of Succession: Heraldry of the Royal Families of Europe, 2nd edition" (London, U.K.: Little, Brown and Company, 1999), table 89.
