[3037] Hugh "was employed in the conquest of Ireland, and for his service there obtained from King Henry II, the whole county of Meath. He was subsequently constituted governor of Dublin, and justice of Ireland. But incurring the displeasure of his royal master by marrying without license the king of Connaught's dau., he was divested in 1181, of the custody of the metropolis. In four years afterwards he was murdered by one Malvo Miadaich, a mean person, in revenge for the severity with which he had treated the workmen employed by him in erecting the castle of Lurhedy." - Burke's "Dormant and Extinct Peerages," 1883, p. 310. He had two sons (Walter, his successor, and Hugh, constable of Ireland) and two daughters (Maud and Elayne, who m. Richard de Beaufo). Hugh succeeded his brother or father, Gilbert de Laci; Gilbert is son of Emme de Laci through who he inherited from her brother Hugh - this Hugh de Laci had inherited from his brother Walter -- their father Walter de Laci, was a Norman who came into England with his brother Ilbert at the Conquest. Carr P. Collins, Jr., "Royal Ancestors of Magna Charta Barons" (Dallas, 1959), p. 143, states Hugh m. as his second wife a daughter of Roderick O'Connor, 183rd Monarch of Ireland (d. 1198). Hugh's domain, Meath, encompassed 900,000 acres in Ireland, much more than presently in the county of this name. Hugh's formal titles included Lord Palatine of Meath, Lord Justice of Ireland and Earl of Ulster. See "Richard and John: Kings at War" (Cambridge, MA: Da Capo Press, 2007) , pp. 85-88. [25744] "Medieval English Ancestors of Certain Americans," Carl Boyer III (Santa Clarita, CA, 2001), p. 156, states Thurstan was still a minor in 1199 and provides his ancestry.
