[7076] Paul J. Griffin (grifpaul@isu.edu) offered on the Internet in 1995 at http://www.isu.edu/~grifpaul/Griffin.html#welsh - "ANCIENT WELSH PEDIGREE OF THE GRIFFIN FAMILY by Zeno T. Griffen and Rev. Duane Nelson Griffin, 1918. It contains 265 hand written pages, the first 28 pages could have been what was rejected by the NYG&B Society in 1918. This manuscript languished unused till 1971 when it was incorporated into the manuscript published by H. Clifford Goslee "Genealogy of the Sergeant John Griffin Family 1647-1920". It was not distributed and remained with a few family members for over 50 years. The only source for this manuscript is as part of Goslee's manuscript, where all 265 pages are duplicated. There are numerous references cited for the origin of the ancient pedigree. Number 91 in descent is Ednyfed Vychan b. abt. 1200. He is the presumed ancestor to Richiart Penfruffwnd (Richard Griffith) b. abt. 1455. Richiart Pengruffwnd is the great-grandfather to Edward b.1602 and John b.1608. A reference is made to the "Dwnn's Visitation in Wales", to the fact it contains marginal notes (I never found a copy with marginal notes) referring to Gasper Gryffyth, the ancestor to Jasper b. 1648, being a son of Richard Griffith. On page 29 starts a section "Sergeant John Griffin and His Descendants" that is extremely well organized and easy to follow. It continues to page 265, followed by a 28-page index of Griffins and non Griffin surnames. Once the family information starts for Sgt. John b.1608 there are no references cited. About 390 Griffins are mentioned along with 990 non Griffins. John Griffin b.1608 was married to Anna Bancroft May 13, 1643 in Windsor, Connecticut. Up to 9 generations are covered ending about 1920. John's (b.1608) ten children, all born in Windsor, Connecticut, are: Hannah b.1649, Mary b.1651, Sarah b.1654, John b.1656, Thomas b.1658, Abigail b.1660, Midwell b.1662, Ruth b.1665, Ephraim b.1668 and Nathaniel b.1673. The families of the first four children are also listed. The Sergeant rank was obtained by being a member of the Simsbury, Connecticut Train Band (?) in 1675. This manuscript is very similar to the "Lineage of Richard Griffith of Cardigan, Wales and Some of His Descendants in America" by Zeno T. Griffin."

Virginia Horler notes:
Alpheus' family moved to Woodstock, Carleton, New Brunswick in the 1850's. His father died there in the Fall of 1860 and his mother died there in 1864, when Alpheus was about 15 years old.
The earliest official mention of Alpheus Winter Palmer is in the 1869-70 Bangor City Directory, which lists A. W. Palmer as a harnessmaker at 119 Exchange Street (John B. Williams & Co.). This is the same company where A. W.'s older brother, George M. Palmer, also served his apprenticeship as a harness and saddle maker. A. W. was living at 47 Court Street. Alpheus had family ties in Bangor including his grandmother, Mary Ann Palmer, a sister, Annie Mary, and an uncle, Joseph L. Palmer. Alpheus also had ties to Portland, Maine where he appears in the 1871 Portland Directory as a harnessmaker, living at 69 Spring Street. Alpheus still had relatives of his mother living in Portland in 1870 including his grandfather, John F. Watts.
After marrying (Elizabeth) Lizzie H. Call in Bangor, Maine in 1870, the young couple moved to Oakland, California in 1872, where A.W., as he was known, opened a business as an importer, manufacturer of and dealer in harness. The 1875 Oakland Directory lists the harness company as a place of business and A. W. Palmer's residence at 962 Grove Street. (The business was sold to his brother-in-law, Frank A. Marston (married to Annie Mary Palmer) in January 1876.) This was the first business of this type in Oakland according to an article in the Oakland Tribune newspaper published on June 5, 1886. He specialized in fine custom work, and also carried a stock of ladies and gentlemen's saddles, bridles, bits, whips, spurs, combs, brushes, robes, blankets, and horse goods of every description. Horse boots were one of his specialities. He carried a complete line of both single and double hand-made Eastern harness at prices ranging from $10 to $40. The business was called Palmer's Harness Factory and was located at 424 Eleventh Street in Oakland.
On April 13, 1875 the Oakland Tribune ran a legal ad concerning the formation of a partnership between George M. Palmer, Charles B. Slicer and Alpheus W. Palmer, all of Oakland, for the purpose of carrying on business as saddlers and harness makers in the City of Oakland under the name of PALMER BROS & CO.
On January 11, 1876 the Oakland Evening Tribune ran an ad for "Frank A. Marston, Importer, Manufacturer, and Dealer in Harness, Saddles, Bridles, Trunks, etc., respectfully announces to the citizens of Oakland that he has bought out that old stand, Corner Broadway and Eleventh Street, Where he will be pleased to see old and new customers. Mr. A. W. Palmer will continue to have full supervision of the manufacturing department.
From 1874 to 1877, A.W.'s brother, George M. Palmer, worked in the business. In 1888, after Managing the Oakland Trotting Park for 10 years, George rejoined A. W. at Palmer's Harness Factory. An article in the January 1888 Oakland Tribune describes the Harness Factory as using only the finest Moffatt leather for fine work including manufacturing all kinds of harness and saddles, boots for all deficiencies of horses, and all kinds of racing boots, etc., for fast horses. The Oakland Directories make continuing references to the harness business through the 1900 edition. In that year A. W. and his wife were living at 262-11th Street in Oakland.
The 1880 Census lists Alpuis (sp) and Lizzie C. Palmer, both aged 32, living in Oakland with three children. Another daughter, Sarah L. Palmer, was born in 1885. The California 1890 Great Register of Voters identifies A. W.s middle name as Winter, gives his age as 40 years old, a saddler, residence at 871 E. Fifteenth Street in Oakland.
In 1900 Alpheus W. Palmer lived in Castoria, San Joaquin County. He was working as a harness maker and stated he was born in Feb 1852 in Maine. No other family members lived with him. (ED 99 page 11B) His wife, Elizabeth, was living in Oakland with children Willis, Sarah and Horace.
Although not a perfect match, I think the State of California Death Records show an Al W. Palmer that died aged 52 (should be 60) in San Joaquin County on 24 May 1909 (13308).
No record for Alpheus W. Palmer in the 1910 census. His wife Elizabeth lived in Oakland in 1910 and said on the census she was a widow.
As of the 1920 Census, A. W. had died and his widow, Elizabeth C. Palmer was living in her own home and Sarah (age 36) was living with her. He married Elizabeth H. Call, married 29 Jun 1870 in Bangor, Penobscot, Maine, b. SEP 1846 in Maine, d. 16 Feb 1923 in Oakland, Alameda, California, buried in NOT at Mt. View Cemetery, Oakland. Elizabeth: After marrying A. W. Palmer in Bangor, Maine in 1870, Elizabeth (Lizzie) C. Palmer moved to California with her husband in 1872. The 1880 Census lists the couple as residing in Oakland with three children.
In 1900 Alpheus was living and working in Castoria in San Joaquin County where he said he was single, and Elizabeth remained in Oakland with their three children: Elizabeth C. Palmer (53) married 30 years, three children, all living; Willis H. (20) clerk in drugstore; Horace F. (26) clerk in clothing store; and Sarah L. ( 22) stenographer. (ED 370 page 3B)
1910 Census Oakland, Alameda, Ward 7, ED 138 page 162, Hillsborough Ave.: Elizabeth C. Powell (64) widow, born Maine, owned own home, 3 children all living; Sarah L. (32) single, born California, stenographer for a paper company. Son Horace F. also lived at home and is enumerated on a different page.
The 1920 Census indicates that Elizabeth C. Palmer was a widow and that she lived in a home of her own with no mortgage and that her daughter, Sarah, was living there as well. Elizabeth died in 1923 at age 78. (Brooklyn Twp, Oakland, Alameda, CA ED 82, page 254B)
Oakland Tribune February 17, 1923, page 2: PALMER - In Oakland February 16, 1923, Elizabeth Call Palmer, widow of the late Alpheus W. Palmer and mother of Willis Hartman, Horace Foster and Sarah Louise Palmer and sister of Mrs. Ella Cutler of Portland, Maine.
The 1930 Census says that Sarah's aunt, Henrietta Steere, a widow, was living with Sarah. Henrietta was born in 1860 in (English) Canada and is Alpheus' sister. Henrietta said that she came to the US in 1868, which was after both of her parents had died.
[20086] The IGI file states Sir William is son of Sir William Stradling and Isabelle St. Barbe. Sir William of 1416 is grandson of Sir Edward Stradling and Gwenllian Berkerolles; Sir Edward was b. ca. 1345 and of St. Donats, Glamorganshire, where successive generations are found.

He helped defend Verdun against Lothaire King of the West Franks in [984/85], but was captured together with Siegfried Comte de Luxembourg. He remained imprisoned for more than 10 years. The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines records that 'comes Raginerus' captured 'Montem castri' from 'comiti Godefrido' in 998 which, if the text refers to this Godefroi, suggests a later date of death (assuming the dating of Alberic is accurate).
