John came from Co. Kent, England on Ship "Ann" and r. Scituate, MA (1639). He served as a Lieutenant in the colonial militia. {- "The Stoddard Family," F. R. Stoddard, Jr. (N.Y.: The Trow Press, 1912, p. 30)}. He was admitted a Freeman at Scituate in 1649 and was Deputy to the General Court in 1657, 1677 and 1678. He was Surveyor of Highways in 1763 and was Deacon of the Second Church of Scituate. Also served as Constable and on the Grand Jury. He had nineteen children, two of whom died in infancy, but his wife Mary was sole executrix of his will. A Prodigy correspondent states (2/91) that his father is John Bryant, Sr. His son, Lt. John Bryant, 3rd was b. 17 August 1644 and m. Abigail, dau. of D. Stephen, Sr. and wife Abigail Shaw. The first John Bryant (Sr.?) died 28 April 1638 in Taunton, MA, leaving no will or other means of identifying a child. John r. Scituate, MA and his will is dated 1684. See NEHGR 17:162-163; 48:46-53. Also see http://babbage.clarku.edu/~djoyce/gen/report/rr03/rr03_224.html in 2003.
One Sunday morning John entered the church meeting house late. After prayers, the Rev. William Witherle spoke to him before the assembled worshippers: "Neighbor Bryant, it is to your reproach that you have disturbed the worship by entering late, living as you do within a mile of this place, and especially so while here is Goody Barstow who has milked seven cows, made a cheese, and walked five miles to the house of God." (Pastor Witherle was John's father-in-law!)

Unverified information states that John's brother is Stephen Bryant, whose wife is Abigail Shaw. Stephen is purported to have arrived in America with his older brother Thomas and younger brother John. Parents of these brothers are purported to be John (b. 1578) and Grace Wayford (b. 1582). Grandparents are purported to be John Bryant (b. 1553) and Rose Church; John is purported to be son of Robert Bryant (b. 1532) and Eleanor Bendish.
For further information on this family, see "History of Scituate, Massachusetts," Samuel Deane (Boston: James Loring, 1831), pp. 227-228 and http://www.scituatehistoricalsociety.org/families/Bryant.htm
[25106] Giles is son of James Bulteel (b, 1538 in Tournai, Hainault) and Maria Willocqueau (b. 1547 in Tournai).

[3053] Solomon is first recorded in Duxbury, Mass. in 1637 and in May, 1638 was promised lands on Duxburrow side. This was probably the usual recompense to a servant; since normal service was 7 years, we surmise that Solomon probably arrived in Plymouth ca. 1631. In Feb. 1639 he received a grant of 25 acres. In 1645 he received a share of land in what later became Bridgewater to which he moved soon after 1649. He died in Bridgewater by 1 May 1671 when his son, Solomon, confirmed that his deceased father, Solomon Leonard, had given land to "my brother John Leonard." "New England Marriages Prior to 1700," by Torrey, gives his marriage to Sarah Chandler as ca. 1640 at Duxbury, Plymouth Co., Mass. A correspondent states "I have that Solomon's father's name was Samuel" but does not have a source. Solomon also had Samuel, John, Jacob, Mary and Isaac per Savage, Gen. Dict., Vol. 3, p. 80. Philip R. Leonard (RR 1 - Box 213, Penobscot, ME 14476) stated in June, 1997 via Internet [pleonard@media2.hypernet.com] that a Malcolm White had provided his family with a genealogy which give Solomon Leonard as born in Monmouthshire and a dissenter who went to Leyden, The Netherlands early in his life and who came to America in 1629-30, settling near Blue Fish Rock, Duxbury, MA. He states Solomon moved with wife Mary to West Bridgewater in 1656 He reports that "History Highlight: Bridgewater, MA", p. 262, states the ancestors of Benjamin F. Ellis came to Bridgewater "...as share cropper tenants of the Leonards, one of the original Proprietors." "Mayflower Families through Five Generations" (Plymouth, MA: General Society of Mayflower Descendants - Vol. II" (Plymouth, MA: General Society of Mayflower Descendants, 1978), pp. 10, states his surname may be Lenner or Leonardson. NEHGR 94:241 lists Solomon as an original proprietor of Bridgewater, MA.

"Ancestral Roots..." (Balt., 1992) 55-25 gives Ralph as son of Fulk Paynel "of Dudley, co. Worcester, founder of Tickford Priory near Newport Pagnell, co. Buckingham, living 1130; m. possibly a dau. of William Fitz Ansculf, a Domesday tenant with lands in several counties, whose lands Fulk Paynel eventually acquired." 55-26, "Ralph Paynell, of Dudley, co. Worcester, one of the rebels against King Stephen in 1138, when he held the castle of Dudley against him, living 1141, d. by 1153; m. N. N., prob. dau. Robert de Ferrers, d. 1139, 1st Earl of Derby, by his wife, Hawise, dau. of Andre, d. 1139, Seigneur of Vitre in Brittany. Evidence of the identity of the wife of Ralph Paynel is her maritagium which consisted of the manor of Greenham, co. Berks (a Ferrers fee). Robert Brian Stewart's web site, http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cousin/html/p133.htm offers: "Fulk Paynel of Dudley was not unlikely a younger brother of Ralph Paynell of Hooten. He was successor of William son of Ansculf, the Domesday tenant of lands in several counties, which included Dudley, Worcestershire, and Newport [Pagnell], Buckinghamshire, acquiring these lands by marriage with William's daughter. Also called Fulco Paganel. He was born circa 1093. He married N. N. of Dudley, daughter of Lord of Dudley William fitz Ansculf de Picquigny. He was was founder of Tickford Priory near Newport Pagnall in Buckinghamshire, England. He died after 1130." Stewart's web site also proposes Ralph's wife to be "the daughter of Robert I, 1st Earl of Derby and Hawise de Vitré. Evidence of this marriage to a daughter of Ferrers comes from her maritagium which consisted of the manor of Greenham, county Berkshire, a Ferrers fee." (ref. K.S.B. Keats-Rohan, "Domesday Descendants, A Prosopography of Persons Occuring in English Documents, 1066-1166, Volume II. Pipe Rolls to Cartae Baronum" [Woodbridge, Suffolk, England: The Boydell Press, 2002], p. 1057.)
