[6101] Harald m. (1) Thora Thorsdottir, daughter of Thorberg (?), before 1045. He reigned as Harald II, surnamed "Haardraade" ("Ruthless"). At age 15 he fled Norway, following the Battle of Stiklestad in which King Olaf (his half-brother) died. He led Varangian forces in Italy, Sicily and North Africa, and amassed enornous treasure in the middle east. After his nephew Magnus died, he subjugated Denmark and in 1066 invaded England. King Harold of England defeated him before rushing to his own defeat at Hastings. See "1066: The Year of the Three Battles," Frank McLynn (London, England: Pimlico/Random House, 1999), Chapters 3, 6 & 8 et ad passim.
