Ancestry.com offers: "Hall Name Meaning - English, Scottish, Irish, German, and Scandinavian: from Middle English hall (Old English heall), Middle High German halle, Old Norse holl all meaning 'hall' (a spacious residence), hence a topographic name for someone who lived in or near a hall or an occupational name for a servant employed at a hall. In some cases it may be a habitational name from places named with this word, which in some parts of Germany and Austria in the Middle Ages also denoted a salt mine. The English name has been established in Ireland since the Middle Ages, and, according to MacLysaght, has become numerous in Ulster since the 17th century."

[2577] In 951 Otto's empire was the mightiest in Christendom. Adelaide, widow of Lothar of Italy, asked him for assistance. He moved across the Alps (947), married her (since his first wife, Anglo-Saxon Princess Editha had died in 946), and called himself King of Italy. Left a widow again in 973 she was badly treated by her son and his wife. In old age she was regent of the empire. Before her death she retired to a convent. Her feast day is Dec. 16. Visconti Name Meaning - Italian: from visconte, a title of rank (medieval Latin vicecomes deputy of a count). Unusually (since most noble families took their surnames from their estates), the surname was sometimes of literal application, but it is also no doubt in part a nickname for someone who gave himself airs and graces, and in part an occupational name for someone employed by a viscount."
