Compton's Encyclopedia (via America Online, 1995):
George VI (born 1895, ruled 1936-52). When Edward VIII gave up the throne in
December 1936, his brother Albert, duke of York, replaced him and took the
name George VI. It was during his reign that Great Britain struggled through
to victory in World War II, India and Pakistan won their independence, and
the British Empire evolved into the Commonwealth of Nations.
As Prince Albert he had served in the Royal Navy and the Royal Naval Air
Force during World War I. On April 26, 1923, he married Lady Elizabeth Angela
Marguerite Bowes-Lyon. They had two children, Elizabeth (later Queen
Elizabeth II) and Margaret (afterward countess of Snowdon).
Although his wife, Elizabeth, desperately opposed his becoming king
because of his poor health and the fact that he stammered badly, he was the
next heir to the throne. He was duly crowned on May 12, 1937.
Throughout World War II the king and queen remained with their people.
Their presence in London during the air raids and their messages broadcast
during those years of anxiety and strain did much to hearten and inspire the
people of Britain and the Commonwealth.
From 1948 George's health deteriorated. He died on Feb. 6, 1952, a few
months after undergoing surgery for lung cancer. His daughter Elizabeth (see
Elizabeth II) took the throne. George's widow, Elizabeth, lived on for many
years as queen mother and one of the most popular members of the royal
family. Her 85th birthday in 1985 was a time of national celebration.

[14886] Charles Trafton was captured by the Abenaquis and taken to Canada in May 1693 at the age of 12. He was baptised at Montreal 12 september 1694 as Charles Louis Marie , and entered the services of his godfather, Count Louis de Buade de Frontenac, governor of Canada. Records of this baptism are said to be on file at Notre Dame church in Montreal. He returned to York at about the time of his fathers death.
